Only a Concept(a big one!)

Why not just use a hinged piece of plywood along the bottom of the tank as a ball shield? this will not only protect the acryllic it will also protect the fish. (if tapping on the glass is bad then pool balls slamming into the tank can't be good for them.)

1/2" acrylic will not be sufficient for a 3' tall tank... and an errant cue ball will leave an ugly mark on acrylic, no matter the thickness - but probably not cause any cracks. If it were me, I'd just put a 1/4" thick acrylic pane in front of the main tank window. It wouldn't hold any pressure, just serve to deflect unforseen projectiles.

The plywood shield is still the best idea...lower it when your not playing pool. I'd even store the pool balls BEHIND the plywood pannel on a shelf so that you are FORCED to lift it up to play.

idk. what is everyones thoughts on glass/acrylic? will half inch do it?
Its jus so damn expensive, Im lookin at droppin a minimum of $250 for glass..
Thanks for the idea, wolf, a flip down shield or even a clear plexiglass shield is genius.
^this is why i havnt started the project yet, i want as many opinions and ideas as i can get... I cant think of everything, but with everyones help I might come close!

I think that in the years to come you'll be happier with a thicker pannel. I always order our tanks with thicker glass just to make them that much more forgiving...

a 7'x3'x3' tank is going to be expensive no matter how you slice it, especially if you want it to look nice. $250 for your window is pretty cheap. I would go with 3/4 glass or 1" acrylic, unless you are making smaller windows.

yeah, It is going to have smaller windows. if the tank is 7' long, It will have Two 36" panels seperated in the middle by a wooden brace. If the tank is 8' long, same dueal window setup, but the windows will be 40" long

I'd make it 8' long. I'd also entertain having it be viewable from the top. However, bad things could happen there. An errant cue ball happens every now and again. I'll have to keep that in mind when I put a tank in our game room.
