Open tops with Mbuna?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've noticed it's not really jumping for the fun of it.

I've seen mbuna jump because another mbuna was chasing it around, and I guess it got desperate enough to jump out. Good thing I was there.

day one of the open tops. I just love the look of the open top, wish I didn't have to worry about the jumping but I'll have to see what happens. FYI the Coralife adjustable mounting brackets are awesome, I would hightly reccomend them to anyone that had coralife aqualights and doesn't need tops, very well constructed.

Nice tank! If you really like the open top you should look into rimless tanks, but still be prepared to loose some due to jumpers. I seen one mbuna jump about four feet out the tank during feeding time.

Thanks, yeah I'd upgrade if I had the $, but times are tough yknow. I am prepared but hoping for the best.

great looking tank-ive kept mbuna for about 5 yrs now and have had only one jumper so far.. hope you dont have any!

why don't you keep the water level lower just to be safe? I haven't seen my mbuna jump too much at the surface though... you should be fine, the tank looks great! I just love mbuna tank setups & watching the mbunas school!!

You could try putting egg crate over the top. It would still let light through but would keep the fish from jumping out. I have a couple known jumpers in my tank especially around feeding time. I'm very thankful for my glass tops

I do have some extra eggcrate in case, but will have to see how it goes. I have had one jumper in the past, and it was during feeding time like you mentioned ash, they love splashing me, greedy buggers. The good thing about that is that I'm there when it happens.

Just checking to see if anyone has open tops on their tanks. I'm thinking about getting rid of my glass tops & getting the coralife adjustable mounting brackets for my single aqualight. The glass tops get so dirty & are so cumbersome when cleaning. I also love the look of the open water, much more evenly distributes the light too.

Gauging how likely I'd have a lot of jumpers or any probs with water condensing onto my aqualight. I know I'll have a lot more evaporation but don't mind it.

FYI, I have about 17 mbuna in a 55g. I have had one isolated jumper that launched out during a feeding frenzy. I know there's no foolproof way, but haven't had any jump when I've had the tops off for cleaning over the months.

Thanks for any input!
if you have jumpers don't do it, i tied it myself about two years ago and i lost 4 cichlids ,i didn't notes ed an till one jumped out while i was feeding, i looked behind the stand sure an off, found 4 chichlids dead...good luck if you do it... but i have my 200g that has canopy. that one i took the glass off.looks sweet nice an clean.....
