Opinion on Angelfish Setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have it set at 79 degrees. That might be a hair on the warm side, but I think they'll be fine.

That's fine, some hobbyist keep it slightly higher than that.

79 is on the cooler side for Angelfish. If you want to you could run the tank as high as 84ish. I've found that much high and the fish start acting weirdly...

How many BN Plecos do you have?

Love that setup. Simple, but still interesting! And I agree, bioload is fine with good maintenance. It's the pairing and aggression that might necessitate some rearranging eventually.

I only have the one albino BN pleco that I got with the koi angels from a local breeder, he gave it to me for free. But, I have some bad news to report as today I lost one of my koi angels probably due to high nitrites as I checked the water with my API master test kit and it was way high. In a matter of ten minutes he went from swimming and falling down on the bottom to just laying down and died. That's my fault though, because I was overfeeding them and I'm going to cut back a lot. But I guess you learn. I did a 60% water change after that so I think that should take care of a lot of that. I also replaced one of the filter cartridges from my filter, it's a top fin 60, and left the other one in. This tank has been going for 3 weeks now. I still have the other 5 koi and 2 marbles, so I think I should still be alright on numbers for forming a pair. I was also wondering, could I get by with a water change every 2 weeks at 50% once this is established? Right now it's only been 3 weeks so I'll do a water change every week of about 33%.

Just wanted to update. I lost another koi angel, not the bloated one but a different one. I still have four other koi angels and the two marbles, which those two don't seem to be affected at all by the stress trom high nitrites. I've done 50% water changes a couple days after but have stopped the past couple days to see if some nitrates will start showing up. The nitrite level has went way down but there's still some in there, in the low level of the nitrite stress zone. I'll probably do a 50% water change again today but first I will check the water parameters.

Alright it's been awhile and I wanted to update on how things are going. I am down to three angelfish, the two marbles and one koi angelfish, as the other 5 koi angelfish just could't survive the initial shock from the high nitrites. These three are doing very good and all three greet me when I walk by. I've also added 8 bloodfin tetra a little over a month agoand 7 rummynose tetra a couple weeks ago to the tank. They are all doing well and the bloodfins have bright red fins and the rummynose have bright red noses. The 3 cory catfish are all still there and doing good with 2 of them having grown to be about adult sized, while 1 has stayed smaller and appears to be a runt but is still active and fun to watch. The albino bristlenose pleco is doing good and has also grown a bit. I've also added some java moss to the tank about a month ago and it seems to be growing under just the normal light bulbs that came with the tank. I am planning on getting 5-6 koi angelfish to replace the ones I lost but this time the same problem shouldn't happen. I will try to add pictures of the current tank layout later on.

May I suggest you add 2 first and another 2 later, to avoid any possible nitrite spike again. When you add a large number of fish at once it makes a load on you bio bacteria untill they multiply enough to handle it. By adding less fish at a time you will avoid that. GL
