Looks like LC needs to get into smaller fish.

Oh ya, I also say no to feeding feeder fish.

I agree with the others, if he is not eating feeders now, stick to the pellets and freeze dried or frozen foods and he will be better of because of it.

Get him out of that 55gal and into something much more substantial though!

its a 75!:irked:

LC, I don't know anything about Dovii chilids. But from reading everyone elses post, they need a bigger tank then a 55, 75 or even a 125 gallon tank.

It don't matter if its in a 55G or 75G, it needs a bigger tank.

Tank issue thing aside, I agree with the majority. A good variety of pellet food (I mix and feed 3 diff Hikari floating or sinking, wardley's,and NLS) and frozen foods are best. I just get a few good quality pellets and pour them into bigger container that my hand can fit easliy in and then you don't have to worry which dry food to feed on any given day lol.

just curious but how could you tell he hated the 135?

If you haven't yet owned fish of that size, think about it on a smaller scale. A 20" Dovii would hate a 18" wide 135 gallon tank for the same reason a 10" fish would hate to live in a 9" wide tank or a 5" fish would hate a 4" wide tank.

Imagine a 6" fish in a 5' long tank. The tank is 10 times longer than the fish. Compare that to a 20" Dovii in an 135 gallon tank (72" x 18" x 25"). The tank is only 3.6 times the length of the fish and not as wide. Plus a larger fish needs a larger amount of room to swim around than smaller fish. I don't just mean moving from here to there but actually being able to swim around a little bit for exercise and sanity.

Don't risk killing a beasty beautiful (and pricey) fish like a male dovii by feeding it cheap feeder fish.

Seriously, don't risk it. I had a clown knife die from feeder poisoning. It was hard to get it NOT to eat feeders though, and it wasn't mine until it was maybe a foot long, so I had no choice, but I still wish I had tried other methods or found this forum faster. He always got sick and laid on the bottom of the tank and barely turned back around to good health, and then it woul hapen again maybe a month later. It just takes one to ruin all the hard work, its really not worth it.

I think L_C knows about the tank size issue... Ive been yelling at him about it for like a year! Im a little uspet though... I seriously dont see you setting up a 180-240 for him in the near future man. Dovii actually grow FASTER after 12" in my experience, so your 125 will last him a good 4-5 months. Which, when you think about it, is really not good.

And ON topic, feeding your fish feeders is okay from time to time, but i dont think it really affects the fish's health/color in a positive way. If you really want it to be healthy for him, spend some dough on cheap tropical fish like some sort of warm-water tetra, baby convict, etc.
