Opinions: Eheim Or Marineland Canister

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Man, those Filstar are priced nice, and the priming isn't as bad as I thought (just lil harder for more being in tight spot) I guess I'm considering three now, the 2028, c-530, or Xp3. I've had good luck with Marinland and Eheim in past, but never tried Rena before.

I'm sure any of the 3 would work well. The only big difference between them seems to be flow, the c-530 rated the highest.

In my experience with Eheim and Marineland canisters, the Eheims are just made better. The parts all fit together perfectly and the whole thing seals easily and runs silently. The marineland canisters i've had always seem to have issues with O-rings not seating properly, parts not sealing completely, or the cheap thin-walled hose they come with kinking. Plus, the marineland parts seem cheap and flimsy (although I have never had a problem with them actually breaking). I say Eheim.

I say XP3

I agree, it's pretty hard to pour a cup of water into a funnel.:D At least if I remember correctly, it's been a long while since I had to prime any of the 6 I have running.

agreed. I haven't had to prime either of mine in years.

because when you clean the canister, the hoses stay full of water.

so all you do is fill up the canister chamber with water, put the aquastop back on (that has the hoses attached), and plug it in.

you don't have to do anything. it just goes. its great.

had a marineland 350 didnt really like it hard to put together and clean plus not as good filtration just bought a eheim 2075 what a difference it made way better filtration and easier to clean

I have two xP3's and other than the priming system have been very happy with them. Have only needed to prime on initial set up and when doing a complete take down for a move. So it is not a problem often.

I got away from most of the Marineland stuff a long time ago. I would not go back unless they do some big upgrades in quality. I do have one of the small portable hang on filters that I use when I want extra flow or to polish water with the micron filter. It is to small to use all the time, for most tanks. The quality and design is better than the 350 IMO. It is a bit noisy compared to the much larger Xp3.

I keep repeating it in the filter threads and am surprised that nobody else seams to be using or mentioning them. The Ocean Clear system gives Monster filtration for any size tank. In my opinion, especially on tanks 150g and up, it is the way to go. If you have the $$.

I dont think you can go wrong with any of those filters, all three have good reputations. Figure out flow rate/media volume/price and see which one suits your need's.
