If you're looking for a plant your fish will leave alone, try anubias or java fern. It's tough and bitter tasting to fish.
How do you figure a BGK that gets 16" can fit in that tank for life? That's insane. They need plenty of space and places to hide.
Again, sand doesn't do this. It sounds like you used some bad sand and weren't cleaning it correctly. How is sand sticky? How can it "rot"? All te sand in my tanks is super easy to clean, isnt sticky at all, and doesn't rot.
If sand is so bad, why do 99% of saltwater guys use it? This is crazy talk from inexperienced hobbyists. Please do some more research and have more experience before dishing out advice.
