Optimal set-up for Ball Python?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I think a hide with low clearance would be okay, don't you think? Obviously I'll either have a small coconut hut, half-log, whatever, and then some sort of larger hide, but still low enough for the snake to feel secure.

The entire cage having a low ceiling is definitely preferable; it's not going to spend much time outside of its hide in an aquarium set-up. Besides, it's way cheaper to get a plastic bin than a 20 gallon long aquarium.

CB Balls can be kept in aquariums without any repercussions, though. If it were WC, I would definitely agree with you. But I have seen plenty of people, a lot on here, who keep them in aquariums and have perfectly healthy snakes. I have a bin already that I'm not using. So if I notice sign of stress, I'll move it. But I want a pet that I am able to see and interact with. Not something to keep hidden away 90% of the day.

I haven't read all the other members posts, but sterilite tubs are fine,a fish tank is decent to,but hold poorly humidity.Humidity as any ball keeper knows requires some usually 50% to 60.When in shed bump it up to 80%.Yes a tank would be a nice display tank, but once you put tinfoil on the top screen, like all us other "bp" "(ball python)" have done. It goes from display to "ghetto", " my opinion".Some prefer paper substrate ,its good, for easy cleaning, but holds lil humidity compared to mulch . Mulch is a better display . Don't forget cool side & warm side in the tank with hidings on both ends, one warm one cool! Also any morph that has spider in its genes is probably going to have woable, this is some thing some people dislike very much.here's a picture of my display of bp's.Before any one asks i got them from Jeff, boaphile!!!DSC_0770.jpg You can go with a rack system, but your display will go out the window!! I will be a lot cheaper. The way i lok at it ,wanna display, gotta pay!!! Good luck with your choice's!!! Jose

Seriously? A tank with a clean water bowl and a heat pad underneath it. That is the optimum set up. ball pythons are the easiest, most boring snakes to set up and keep.

ill agrue the toss over that post tanks are not ideal to keep bp or any other snakes in for that matter... maybe maybe a tank is a good option for a pigmy rattler... that is the only snake other than viper berus i would even think about tanking.... oh maybe a couple of sea snakes????

seriously these are borrowing nocturnal snakes, they are always happiest in dark tubs....

Snakes do just fine in top loaders. You're crazy if you think you cannot keep snakes in the traditional glass aquarium.

That being said, the venomous snakes that you mentioned would be unsuitable for that style of enclosure because of the lack of a way to double screen it and the lack of a way to securely lock the tank. FL FWC has in their regs that top loaders shall not be used as containment for any venomous snake. But this is for completely different reasons- if it were secure, I am sure I could set up a happy and healthy venomous snake in one.

Lets see i'm gonna put my dog in a aquarium because he fits.Aquariums are for water!!!! Yes you could but a bp there,1st there mostly active at night, your barely gonna see him unless you mess with him a lil to come out!!! 2nd how lovely is a display tank gonna look with some tinfoil taped to the top!!! If that's what you want go for it,i once had a dozen of 10g rooming the house with tinfoil & guess what i looks hidious. You can & could,if you want to go for it,remember this when your bp is having a bad shed!!!! That ben said let me put my Fastaes in the dog house!!!Bp's are boring & super easy to care of but in the right conditions!!!

you're being absurd and argumentative for no reason. you know damn well a ball python can be kept perfectly happy, fat, and healthy in an aquarium, so what's the big deal?

dogs and snakes have completely different requirements and nature, so comparing the 2 is just plain stupid, and you (should) know that.

yeah, you're not going to see it all day, every day. that's not the point though; when it does come out, you want to be able to see it. you're guaranteed to NEVER see it in a tub unless you take it out.

the tinfoil is only necessary if you can't keep the humidity where you need it. if you're in an area with a dry climate (like arizona), you might need to partially cover the screen lid with something. however, OP is in ohio, and i doubt he'll have any troubles with humidity if he has a moist hide box and a big enough water bowl.

also, if you don't like the look of foil, why did you use it? cut a piece of clear plexi to fit the lid, simple.
