I'm curious as to what trays people put different media in with the FX6/5.

II think I've probably been doing it the "opposite" way for years now. I currently have the thick foam filter on the bottom with my ceramic bioballs, in the middle basket I put the large ChemiPure Elite bag (it takes up the whole basket), and in the top I put more bioballs and some chipped coral, and I usually top it off with a blue filter disc.

When I do the filter clean, that top blue filter is always packed with sludge. I've recently seen some videos that indicate I should have ChemiPure on the bottom, the bioballs in the middle and just foam in the top.

Opinions?

Thanks!

Also, I have my output at the bottom of the tank, like the intake, only on opposite sides (as opposed to putting the output closer to the surface as I've seen on some videos).

I use bio home (bio) media in bottom tray with white floss pad on top of media,, then in the middle tray I use bio foam on bottom then a fine pad then a medium pad then a coarse pad, then in top tray I use eheim mechanical rings and then a carbon pad on top of the media,, been running that set up on 6 different tanks for over 2 years and it works well for me

Blue filter pad should be in bottom tray or at the bottom of middle tray

Placing the intake for the filter is a decision you need to make on the type of set up you have, ideally you need 2 filters with 1 intake at bottom of tank and 1 intake at top of tank, to get around this try using a high powered wave maker,

Putting a blue filter pad (fine) in top tray will just cause your filter to block up and will require cleaning more often

I have 4 RIOs - one on each corner of the side, pointed down, and I have the SunSun JP-25F in the center - that pushes so much air & water that it goes from the back of the tank to the front of the tank. Plenty of mid to surface level water movement. I use the RIOs to try and help prevent detritus buildup in the corners, so there are no "dead spots" in the tank.

Ok, I thought the top was the output and therefore it would catch anything that wasn't caught by the main sponges? Last change I did, I left it off, as I've noticed some "surging" with the unit, that I thought might have been due to clogging, but when I cleaned it it wasn't that bad, so not sure what's causing the "surging" (maybe "swishing" might be more accurate).
