Ordering New 440/480 any advice?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i’ve got two leak sensors - an audible and networked one - i need to add one more of each...

wires - i need a board too - this is still kind of the rough in - still adding components and plumbing bits.... constantly evolving ?

added this mediocre camera for piece of mind... so i can see if my sumps running dry/over

Cheers all!

Is your sump sitting directly on your hardwood floor? My mistake was putting them on the hardwood floor. I always said it’s hardwood and that I don’t care about a bit of water. Then my hot water heater leaked a week ago and I saw how even a little water causes havoc. Hence why I’ll be getting everything off the floor and into trays.

small update / query -

going well in this tank minus few losses due to unknown -

water is a bit cold - 78 - the tap water i use for my drip is much colder than it was in the summer and i’ve had to increase drip from 10% per day to now 30%

i’ve added 1000w of heater to hopefully get the temp up to 82 to hinder any opportunistic infections about -

questions

1 - ive added all this media for future use in new sumps for seeding BB - i’m wondering if it should not be packed to in here on a regular basis

2 - i think i’m only getting 5000 gph after head loss from my 2 - L2... thinking of adding another..... i’m only getting 7x or maybe less turn over - 750g is total exterior volume - actual probably 600g? that would be 8x
i’ve read predator tanks call for 12x turnover -

3 - filter floss trays - ive had to clean every week as they get clogged and water spills out of tray - ive got the most fine pond “foam filter” on top of normal filter floss - would sponges be better? any ideas are welcome!

going to add future -

AquaMaxx TS-3 Sulfur Denitrator

and Ultraviolet

thanks all!

it’s sitting on rigid insulation foam - but yes sitting on engineered hardwood as it’s a slab - it’s gotten more damage due to it being soft -

if we ever rip it up it will be an ordeal - probably self level and put vinyl down or stain concrete -

late reply ??

Your seed materials sitting in the sump shouldn't affect flow. I don't like putting media in the drip trays but prefer to place it just under to avoid clogging.
If those gold sev's are clogging the system maybe they need a new home ?

i just wonder if it would be better to pack it full to increase the size of the bio filter -

i’m trying to brainstorm about the prefilter material i think i’ve read folks having to change filter socks weekly... wondering if this is just the norm....

the sevs need a home for sure! going to run them down to lfs when i get a chance....

thanks for feedback!

I would use the space to seed as much media as you need. It will be limited by the bio load in the current system of course.
Been a long time since I took care of a system using micron socks. Some of that will be personal preference. Build up a stock of them that you can wash yourself.

little more on this build -

added a 2650gph - probably ~1800gph after head loss -

think i’m at the 10x turnover finally ?

the sump / drains can handle much more....

only opened the gate valves 1/2 turn ea to accommodate the extra gph....

Nice setup. That's a lot of filter media! Just make sure you keep it clean.
As far as floss sheets, I have started to bleach mine. I use bleach solution , rinse and let them dry. I rotate them (extra sheets). I can always pop in a new one if needed between cleaning. I also have a setup where filter socks are last . I do the same thing with the socks.
Seems easier than repeated rinsing every week when I clean the tank.
