What is the best way to put a sponge on the intake? My first thought is zip tie but won’t that make it hard for maintenance? I would imagine I would need to clean that out fairly often...
Yup more often the better.
Ive gotten the ones made for it from aquarium co op and ive made my own. They stay pretty tight on there. Really you can put them on any filter intake.

Just dig or cut out sponge to fit the intake. Personally I cut enough so there is a small gap. This will assure that water passes thru. I do treat the sponge as with any of my sponges in the AC filters. Remove and clean off in aquarium water removed during wc.
I’m not sure if I can quite picture what you mean about the small gap. I feel like it would need to fit fairly tight or else the Oscar will have a new toy. Lol.

So the first time I did this I took a piece of sponge and cut it to size cut a small incision in the top of it and cut down inside about 3/4 of the depth of it. I then crammed it on my intake for my 304 canister. Worked fine. Later I found some for maxijet powerheads and those are hollow all the way through and smaller in diameter l ziptied the end shut to use on a smaller 104 canister. Not to long before I took down the 75 for the 180 I found this video and looked at his online store and I purchased the sponge filters he has made for this. I'm using them on the tanks I take care of at the clinic now. They are great! Bored out to fit the intake tube but not all the way through.

These are great filters. Another idea is to buy a 2 inch dheet of poret foam from swiss tropicals cut it to match the foam pad that comes with the filter. I use 30ppi i think. This stuff is hands down the best foam out there. At 2 inches it will add additional room for bio

Wow. Great video. It just makes so much sense. I wish I would have seen that 6 months ago. I have spent almost $100 on media go that penguin 350 bio wheel. But it’s on my 20 gal so its still doing pretty good.
