Hey all, need some advice. During my time on mfk iv become to love the bichir species. I recently picked up a 6" armatus for my 120. I would like to know if anyone has kept these two species together before. Obviously if I purchase the bichir, it will be large enough the armatus shouldn't bother it at all.

Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

Make sure the ornate isn't too large... They are pretty good hunters as well. I've never owned or desired to own any of the silver teethy fish, so I can't speak on their aggression. Is it a type of fish that eats another of your fish randomly with no signs? Or is it the type that is constantly harassing?

I don't know lol iv only had my armatus about 2 weeks, and he's been solo in the 120 from day one. So I can't say too much about his temper yet.

I'm not sure of the ornate's habits but if you get one that is bigger than the six inch armatus it may attack or try to eat the arm at some point. On the other hand, the six inch arm will be almost a foot long in a few months with good care.I doubt the ornate can keep up with the arm's growth rate and it will probably soon be in danger of being eaten.

If that's the case I could setup my old 90gal that's in storage, but the gf wouldn't be happy lol the tank looks too empty right now. I think id be more worried about the ornate eating the armatus rather than the other way around. I could also possibly put a divider on a angle in the tank. Give the ornate more floor space while keeping lots of open swimming space for the armatus. Do you think that would work? If their growth rates have major differences?

Well how big is the prospective polypterus?...If they're sizes are comparable them they may ignore each other.

If you got an ornate at 10", I think that would be your best chance for both fish, as long as the armatus doesn't constantly harass the ornate. Get the armatus on pellets first IMO.

He's eating talapia, next step is pellets. Or at least talapia stuffed with pellets lol

I have armatus with bichirs. They live no problem.

ornate is one of the more aggressive upper jaws you might wanna try a sen or a palmas less aggressive.
