Ornate bichir with Armatus?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Preferably I would want another carnivore so I wouldn't have to feed two different diets. I'm really leaning towards some type of bichir. Can anyone recommend a good species that could live with the armatus? Also with the same diet?

Senegalus palmas palmas any upper jaw bichir really you night have some problems with size and aggression with lower jaw bichirs. I dont know the diet of an armatus but if its meaty fish shrimps and sinking pellets they will work great!

I have 3 lower jaw bichirs with my 6 inch armatus. All of them are approxamately 5 inches and haven't grown for a year! They are perhaps runts. They are a delhezi, weeksi and a retropinnis. The bichirs and armatus get along fine. They don't bother each other at all. The thing I love about this combo is that the bichirs eat whatever is left over by the armatus. If the armatus isn't hungrey, the bichirs will eat the food. A bottom cleaner! lol

I know next to nothing about bichirs so this may sound like a dumb question. But what's the difference between upper and lower jaw bichirs?

Upper jaws (Except the Ornate) are smaller (~8-14" max), friendlier, insectivores.
Upper jaws have their eyes and mouth facing forward. Aside from sniffing the floor, they swim around and hunt prey in upper and mid water at night.

Lower jaws are bigger (16-30" max) piscivores. They think swimming animals are tasty.
Lower jaws have their eyes and mouth facing up. They dig into the sand or plank on a plant, and ambush fish swimming by above their face.

lower jaws in a nutshell are the larger species of bichirs. They have a lower jaw that's longer than the top jaw (self explainatory). they usually grow to more than 2 feet so a 150 gallon tank is good for them. Upper jaw bichirs have the upper jaw longer than the longer jaw. They MOSTLY grow to less than 14 inches INCEPT for the ornate and weeksi bichirs that can frow to 18 to 24 inches long. GO RESEARCH
