Ornate Birchir or Florida gar?

ornates dont max out that fast, i think you'd be good for a couple of years
 
Thanks guys I think I'm going with the gar.
Any advice on how to pellet train a 7" gar?

I starved mine for a week. And fed floating pellets. Anything that sinks will bend your gars nose over time. I feed Hikari floating cichlid gold. It's hard to find high quality pellets in my area. Here's a video on my gar eating. Tank is 75 gallons but most fish in my tank are moved around to different people(I start the grow out and the fish usually ends up in my friends pond). The gar will be staying though. Upgrading soon.

I think ornate bichir's look nicer than gars IMO, and seem to be more interactive and since you want SA cichlids with them i would go with the ornate! But if ornate is too big for you, you could get several senegals? But at the end of the day it's your tank and you should decide what you want!
