Ornate overly aggressive?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't rule the ornate out. I recently picked up a 14 inch ornate and had to rehome it after a week because he had taken chunks out of all the other fish in the tank. I couldn't believe how aggressive he was. Beautiful fish, but I've heard of other ornates acting the same way.

I have 2 Senegals about 5-6 inches and woke up to a small chunk ripped out of my 3 inch BGK..I thought i could skip a night of feeding since i see many others do it but errr...Keep their bellies full. The BGK is still alive and hope he recovers!

We're talking about a 5" ornate? Highly unlikely that he would attack anything other than another poly at that size unless the victim is smaller than he is.

I STILL THINK THE ORNATE AINT THE CULPRIT. FOR ALL YOU KNOW BICHIRS NEED TO SNIFF THEIR FOOD SO NEAR THAT SOMETIMES THEY EVEN MISS THE FOOD IN FRONT OF THEM, DO YOU THINK AN ACTIVE BGK WOULD ALLOW ITSELF TO BE SNIFFED BY THE ORNATE AND EVENTUALLY BE EATEN WITHOUT EVEN TRYING TO FEND IT OFF? BICHIRS HAVE VERY POOR EYESIGHT. THEY RELY MORE ON SMELL RATHER THAN SIGHT. AND AS YOU'VE SAID, BEFORE THE INCIDENT THE BGK IS PERFECTLY FINE AND I WOULD ASSUME THAT IT CAN DEFEND ITSELF, OR AT THE LEAST FLEE WHEN THREATENED.

black ghost knives are not the most agile fish, could have been any of the fish. I don't think the ornate or who ever was the fish to do it would be looking at him as food, this could have been a territory issue, food squabble whatever, the fish was not eaten so thats what I would conclude from that. I have had many a fish's occupancy in a tank terminated to such fights. O.P should post a pic of the deceased if they have one then we can guess better who the culprit was.

its prob the silver aros lol,my aros dont like thin fish it chases it all the time, ornates only aggressive too other polys

You have gone from "it died", to "it was the aro", to "it not being the Ornate". Which is it?

I don't have a pic, tail was completely gone, the fin was ripped in 2 places, a a piece missing, body and head didn't seem to have damage.

<insert Taps> In any case I lost him last night after a water change. All other fish are fine except for the ornate. <end Taps>

Began to freak out after replacing the water. Floating head up and then tail up, his last movement.

I lost a pike cichlid in my 125g predator tank today.
There were 6 fish... only one was capable of such devastation.
My punk 8" ornate. It's true, these guys can be pretty nasty.
