Wow!! They are beautiful :). I wonder what size tank are you keeping them in? And do they have tankmates, if so what are they? Just curious yours are very nice, just wonder how you do it :)

Not sure about two species being in the hobby but I am quite sure there are at least two "Ornatums" in the wild. The remote areas where these fish come from are largely unexplored
and it is well known that at least one other exists. Many years ago (I think around 1984) Paul Loiselle did a series of articles on American cichlids in FAMA. It was quite informative at the time. One of the fish he talks about he named the black dempsey, it was a Ornatum or subspecies of it....
Mel, I've read there are possibly two species in the hobby (I use that phrase loosely because these are so seldom seen) being called "ornatum." What's your take on this?

They are a very tough fish, much more so then Festae(with whom they share their tank) in my opinion. Not real aggressive but they do not back down at all and are also not
the least bit shy. One of my all time favorites at this point.
They look beautiful! How do they get along with each other and their tank mates?

They are kept in a 270 gallon (6x3x2) with Festae and Istlanum...

They are slow growers for sure much like the Atros and Festae. Lots of debate as to maximum size, but 14 to 16 inches is the mostly likely range.
Do you have any expectations as to the max size these ornatum will get to? They seem to grow super slow. Ive wondered if the reason nobody has bred them is due to them not being capable of breeding till a certain size or age

I have never had a fish grow this slow.I got mine a little over a year ago at a 1/2 inch and now the largest may be right at 5 inches. How long have you had yours and how big were yours when you got them?
