A 125 gallon would probably be the best size for the owner. It's an easily obtained size that can be adapted even in most apartments, and certainly in practically every home. Filtration options are plentiful and water changes aren't terrible. The cost for heating and medicating is relative low, and few people have issues moving 125 gallon tanks around.

From the Oscar's viewpoint, I probably wouldn't describe it as ideal or best, but managed properly it can be fine. "Fine" is a reasonable target for all the fish we keep given the practical and financial restrictions for most people. "Best" and "ideal" for most people dwarf the sizes of tanks we can acquire. Nature gave them far more space. Still, best and ideal are not required to raise an Oscar, and few would ever spend to do so. But it's still far larger than a 125.
