oscar hybrids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Fancy names for certain strongly colored Oscars are just funky ways for your LFS to get you to buy them. They are not true species. Its just marketing. Ive seen a tank filled with baby Oscars in Petland Discount. All with no eyes. Looks like they were born this way. They were marked up as rare Blind Cave Oscars.

I had seen an image online once of someone saying their oscar and parrot crosse... there was a pictured of 2 deformed faced fish, they were ugly with regular oscar bodies...

i wanna know if they can breed with species in their family Astronotinae as well as their genus a la convicts and other species in the cichlasomatinae family

e.g. species from the genera chaetobranchus and chaetobranchopsis

Thats freakin awesome!

never heard of them there's the oscar volitan or the long finned though

there is only one other fish that the oscar is PROVEN to be able to reproduce with, Astronotus crassipinnis , but truthfully, i know know if you would notice a difference because they look so much alike. The are other non-verified reports of oscars cross breeding.. but none that i know for sure have been proven... http://www.pecescriollos.de/go/astronotus-crassipinnis

Hybridization is always possible within the same genus so an Oscar could interbreed with any Astronotus, not just Crassipinnis.

Geeze, balloon oscars, really??? The sad thing is I have heard a lot of "balloon" fish are made by injecting something into the fish .... not a positive thing in my eyes ...

While that does occur, all the ones posted on this thread are just short body oscars. Most balloon fish are just short body although I don't know about the mollies.
