I've got a 90 gallon horse trough (26'' by 48''). If I do a daily 15-20% water change every day could I keep it in a single oscar in it for life? It will have a sponge filter or two, other than that I will be relying on the water changes. Possible? Or bust?

I would think it could be done as long as a few things are in line. like the fact that if the container is metal, it probibly will not work. It would more then likely rust or corrode. also if you have horses drinking from it, i'm sure you don't, they would deteriate the water quality fast. also your sponge filter idea should work just power them with powerheads instead of air and clean frrequently, once every week or two with tank water from the W.C.

so to sum up:
W.C. good!!!:)
Sponge with powerheads Good!!
rubber container(size is great by the way)
Keep the horses out :)
Temp around 78*F
Then you should be golden
Hope this helped you out a little, good luck

You can actually use a metal trough, but only if your ph is neutral. Zinc begins to leach into the water as a perquisite to rust, but only if the ph is not neutral, or close to it.

If it is a rubbermaid or something similar, then go for it.

I've had this trough for quite some time and it doesn't seem to have any rust. It is metal though... I've kept a school of platies in the trough for a while and they are all in good health.

This. Galvanized stock tanks can leech zinc into the water pretty easily.

Oh and no there are no horses drinking from it. :rofl:
I don't have a test kit. :confused::(:confused:

also, just a side note......what is going to keep this oscar from sky diving every 5 minutes?

Nothing... I've not kept one before so I hadn't thought of that... :irked: I could make a hardware cloth top for it though :)
