Mine never got along, either. My JD was entirely too aggressive.....I did the divider thing for about a week, then I realized that they did not have anywhere near enough room in the divided tank. I rehomed the JD and moved the oscar to his new home shortly there-after.

Sorry to hear that. Your JD looks neat.

Ok when it comes to jd's theres a rule of thumb and its true for most cichlids. If you have a 4 foot tank the at about 5 inches the jd is gonna claim 2 feet for himself. Near adult size he will claim the tank. The jd is a very underrated cichlid. My 11 incher once wiped out 2 of his 4 tankmates in 10 minutes. After that he was housed with a pacu and jag and all was well

You shouldn't have a problem once you put them in the 200. Do you have plants in the tank?

Sure do . . . About 5 various plants, and one huge 36" plant the Oscar sleeps behind. The JD has a large Y shaped PVC pipe "he" uses for a cave at the other end of the tank. JD only lets the pictus cat inside his cave occasionally. He's a territorial lil buggar.

Honestly I wouldn't worry too much about the bite you saw buddy. If they had a serious problem with each other you would probably see it all day, lights or no lights. I'd guess it was just a minor territorial thing. I have had a bunch of different oscars over the years, with my tough as nails Jd, and usually their disputes were quick and without any serious damage. The oscars i've had tended to be boisterous and punchy, almost like big dumb puppies and the only time they had problems with my Jd is when they goof around too much and bounce into his area. Oscars have a lot of personality, maybe too much for Jd's sometimes. At least that's what it seemed like over the years in my tank, i'm sure it varies from fish to fish. Good luck either way.

I have O and JD together. They don't fight in my case. Maybe because I have a female JD and they are less agressive? Dunno though.

I had the same response with an O and JD in a 55 after 2 months as well.
Mine progressively got worse and I had to rehome. They wouldn't make it a year until an upgrade.
In a 200g yes, not sure how long they will make it.

When I rearranged the tank it didn't make much of a difference.
Good luck

What size is full grown for a Dempsey?

My JD is already over 8" maybe even 9". The only thing he's really claimed is a PVC pipe which he shares with a Pictus-Cat occasionally. They all share every area of the tank..

I had one that was 11 inch, I think that is about as big as they get. I've heard of someone with a 12 inch Dempsey, but that is veeery rare. Even 11 inch is quite rare.
