Oscar + Jack Dempsey?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
your gonna eventually run into problems since a oscar will need a 75G and the JD is fine in the 55G..so itll be best if you upgraded to a 125G so theres at least some room if not enough..but other than that i dont know what else to say

A 55g is too small IME for a single Jack Dempsey if you get a big one. I had one for over 4 years that was 13" from head to tail when he died. I always get the BS flag on this because I do not have pictures. This was before I had a digital camera and I don't think I even had a cell phone. I was about 16 or 17 when he died so I def didn't. Didn't get one til I was 18. Anyways, a JD if properly cared for will hit 10" and be thick, and produce a ton of waste.

They may be fine together for now, but eventually their territories will be too small for that tank. Minor chasing and nipping is completely normal. If my Midas tank went 30 seconds without a nip or chase I would think something is wrong. I do not remove fish unless fins are being shredded or if a fish is extremely stressed.(hiding, secluding, etc.)

My Jd is 5 years old and 11 inches. Built like a house though. He was never really over aggressive with any tankmates until he began trying to spawn with my Dovii recently. Before that he just had to lunge in any fishes direction and they took off. He never chased any fish relentlessly, just punked them until they backed off. The Oscars I had would test his patience more often than most fish, but they knew when to leave an area. If your Dempsey is sharing space with the Pictus at all I would say he's probably similar in disposition to mine. If so, they should learn each others boundaries without any death or serious problems.

It would be great if my JD grew to 11" or even 13" like yours.

He's already pretty think n' chunky... He's borderline fat-ass,- to use correct medical terms :nilly: The only thing he seems to really love is bloodworms, he also bottom feeds the half-chewed food the Oscar leaves behind. He won't eat Hikari Gold pellets (when their floating). But he'll do a backflip for the bloodworms's.. He's goofy :screwy:
