Oscar or Midas/RD mix

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it's going in a 75G I urge you to get a RD.
This is not a biased suggestion, I'm just giving you an honest answer.
The Oscar will make a mess really quick in a 75G, & will will only get worse as he gets bigger.
My RD poops a lot but not nearly as much as any of my O's.

i like the colors of some tiger oscars better, but i have never owned a RD/Midas before would it be able to be tanked with a senegal that i currently have in the tank?

I've never kept bichirs so I can't tell you for sure.

With an bichir it's a risk either way.
My Rd doesn't really bother with any bottom dwellers that stay out of his area, he likes to dig but the bottom dweller stay of of his way.

The O's I've kept love hanging out around the bottom when they don't see me.
I would think this might be a problem since bichirs stick to the bottom.

Provide a bunch of hiding spot for your bichir.

is the poop amount between the two that much different?
Yep, food goes right thru O's, I don't even know how they absorb any of it. :naughty:

Good luck with that setup for the time being.
You'll mos def need a bigger tank in a few months.
Keeping 2 fish that grow larger than the width of your tank is not a good idea.

Post pix when you get a chance.

i dont a senegal gets large enough to be housed with a full grown O, normally cichlids and bichirs get along great but with Os since they are constantly hungry and on the prowl for food once it is grown i feel like the sen will become a quick snack for it since they have that skinny worm like body (should be fine if its already grown and the O is very small until the O gets big enough to swallow it)

i disagree, from what i've read, fish really dislike the taste of bichirs, and sens get up to 12 inches? so i think a sen will be fine with an oscar.

But if the bichir is small enough to fit on the O's mouth, it only takes a taste for it to end ugly.

My O's cleaned my tank right out over a period of a few months(tops).
Even if the O doesn't want to eat the Bichir it might just keep on picking on it.
Not a great situation IMO.
That being said not all O's are monsters.

O's grow much faster than bichirs & the O will most likely out compete it for food.
My RD is a pig but he doesn't let his tank mates starve.
:naughty:

We'll see the outcome shortly. ;)
Post up pix when you get a chance.
