oscar questions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it's cool, they are just being shy at that size. my "O's" did that all the time. Let them get to know the 55gal and start a patten with your lights. turn your light on in the morning and turn them off at night. is the tank in a bed room? living room? if in a bed room, at night when you turn off the tank lights, keep a soft night light on in your room...so that you not shocking them when you turn on the room light.

Lionfish???

I agree with haynchinook334 on that b/c mine used to do that when they were 3" and back when I had 3 of them the red oscar jumped out once from being startled by the light being turned on suddenly.

Now, being 12" they're much more docile than they used to be but still there's the occasional water splash.

if you have been moving them around they are probably just confused, oscars do not like change, they will probably be ok in a couple weeks

very true ... oscars want a stable environment .... any! .. change will tend to spook them or piss them off :D.... and going to the bottom as you describe usually means they are spooked ..ie stressed .....

if your water perameters are fine, temp fine, it could be from them being moved around..every oscar i have ever had always had a "moody" spell once in a while...i had red as a kid that stayed like that 24/7

They will adjust they seem to be new at 3" long. Dont move them around anymore and they will be fine. I taught my Oscar that when the light goes on he gets food, now everytime there is light he gets excited and begs. They are smart and in time should be just fine.

78 is a good temp. but i notice they seem to be happier with it at 80 (more active)
You might try increasing the temp by a degree each day until 80. They may become more active.

other than that as long as your parameters are good
Nitrite-0, Nitrate- < 40, Ammonia-0 and PH is stable... I would say they are just being shy.
They'll come around eventually. Oscars can be funny that way.

Just make sure you upgrade them to a larger tank in the future. 55g is not a permanent home for 2 O's.
