oscar questions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hey,

I have the same problem here. just got 2 oscars and the first day they were just shy, few days and they were cool with the new tank, begging for food and eating out of my hand. now something happened and they lay on the ground, don't wanna move and don't eat. thats 2 days now. they are 2.5". whats going on?? water is fine...

your water conditions r fine? nitrite and nitrates r down? what r tank mates? and i know that the stonefish is brackish but i was setting up my 55 gallon brackish tank and just put him in with my others. he seems to be adjusted to the hard and higher pH water pretty good. he is very active and eat well. but he is moved to the brackish tank now. i got rid of one oscar and got a silver arowana and him and the albino oscar are doing great together. and before anyone says it i know that they will need a bigger tank. this tank is not perminate. im just growing the arowana and oscar for there own 150.

yes, water is fine. Tank mates are smallish fish like neons ( for now ! )
Today one of them has like dark spots in the center of the eye surface. And both have a few white lil spots on the fins.

The white spots sound like Ich. Are there any on their gills?? Just change the water frequently and if it gets worse, go get meds for them.

i had an albino oscar and he did that he was 7" they just dont like bright lights and i saw on a website that they like dem lights

no, I can't see any. Only the side fins. All other fish are fine...
I will rise the water temp and change water freq.

Ok, b/c I've had that happen to my Oscars before and all I did was change the water more and it got better. Nothing too serious though just ever since they've had HITH (it's on it's way out now) I kinda check all my bases with mine.

78 is a good temp. but i notice they seem to be happier with it at 80 (more active)
You might try increasing the temp by a degree each day until 80. 2 degrees is not too much to increase in 1 day, plus, it is not like the temperature instantly increases because the heater has to raise the temp and that much water will take a while They may become more active.

other than that as long as your parameters are good
Nitrite-0, Nitrate- < 40,WHOA! Nitrates less that 20, with less that 10 being preferable, are required to prevent stunting and hole in the head (HITH) a nasty disease Ammonia-0 and PH is stable... I would say they are just being shy.
They'll come around eventually. Oscars can be funny that way.

Just make sure you upgrade them to a larger tank in the future. They will each grow up to 1.5 to 2 inches per month with good food and clean water so "the future" is 1-2 months from now. At about that time, the nitrates will get unmanageable. 55g is not a permanent home for 2 O's. Try 55 gallons as being the MINIMUM for 1 o with no companions and constant water changes. With 2 oscars 110 would be the minimun (agression issues aside) with 125 being preferable
I know that I sound harsh, but oscars are commonly put in highly overstocked tanks. Kinda like the common pleco of the cichlid world.

Mine have been in a 47G tall for at least a year, yeah I know it's small and they were a tad stressed but they grew to 12" fine. I got them a 65G long tank and now they're perfectly happy. But everyone recommends at least a 125G which I don't agree with. Yes they'd be happy to have all that space but it doesn't hurt them to be in a 65G.
