Oscar rescue story!

All you had to do is remove the bag of carbon. You did a lot of unnecessary cleaning. Yes, start your treatments, I personally wouldn't use Melafix, but that is just my preference.

What's wrong with Melafix? I heard it was suppose to be used with Pimafix?

I don't use carbon in a single one of my tanks. As far as meds go, it depends on what you're treating as to how needed they are. For wounds and torn fins, clean water and salt work just fine. Since I keep Clown Loaches in my big tank, I can't use salt so I rely on just clean water and within a few days their fins are usually fine if they even get nipped. The only time I'll use meds is for parasites or fungus and I use the Jungle/Tetra Parasite Clear and Fungus Clear (can't be used with the Loaches). But Ich, I just raise the temperature to 87 degrees and if that alone doesn't work, due to the Loaches I use Coppersafe by Mardel in a light dosing.

some people prefer lots of small water changes +salt to treat cichlids . its really pesonal expirience and preference.if you treat with both pimafix and melafix ,usually half dose is recommended. good luck --keep posting Im interested in how he comes through

I see, well I'll probably just put extra bio balls in that filter basket then. But the melafix says it helps repair fins and prevent infection ect so I think it's worth it to use it with the Pimafix for any possibility of a fungal infection. Can't hurt could it (provided I do it right which I will)

His tail concerns me because it looks REALLY weird so that's why I am doing the treatments.. but so far nobody has seen a problem with his fins besides being nipped up. I can get a new picture but his fins look just about the same as before

I am open to the idea of not doing the treatments.. if we can determine that he is 100% healthy in terms of bacterial/fungal/parasitic infections... I don't want my Goby getting Ill and the Oscar doesn't seem to be on deaths door lol so I know if he is sick at all it's not too progressed and I can catch it early.

He's eating now (somewhat) and he is pretty active so I'm not too concerned... but I'd definitely like some more opinions on his health.

New photos can be provided on request :)

Thank you very much! I think I may just try many small water changes and the salt for now and if anything progresses or anybody seems concerned about his health ill start with the Pimafix and Melafix. So when you say half dose you mean split the total dosage between the two? should be easy enough, if I have to.

Will keep you guys updated for sure! I really want this guy to do well because so far I love this cohab! Marbled Goby and Oscar looks way too sick and not to mention I have already taken a liking to the Oscar :)

now I just need names for them lol

If he is active and eating, I would just leave him alone. If you ask a lot of experienced fish hobbyists, most will probably tell you that Mela/Pimafix are a waste of money. I have not had success in the past with it, and it turns out that it is a waste of money. But thats jmo.

well. he is spitting up the pellets. I found a big pile of it just now. Maybe he is still too stressed, but like a typical oscar is taking it then spitting it up later?

I'll try again in a few days and see, I'm also going to try breaking them in half because the pellets are pretty big

but he has taken pollock and didn't spit that up so that's good

yes ..half dose of each good luck ...!!

I PERSONALLY MAKE MY OWN MELAFIX W/ TEA TREE OIL. IT AIDS IN HEALING THE FISH AND I THINK IT WORKS BETTER THEN SALT. SALT ONLY ENHANCES THE SLIME COAT. I USE SALT FOR ICK AND UP MY TEMPS TO 86 AND NO PROBLEMO. ANYWAY IM GLAD YOUR LITTLE FELLA IS WORKING HIS WAY BACK TO NORMALCY. ALSO SORRY I DIDNT GET BACK TO YA SOONER BUT IVE BEEN VERY BUSY AT WRK TODAY. AS FOR THE CARBON GET RID OF IT....THAT IS TRULY A WASTE OF $. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR OSCAR.

I used Melafix/pimafix for years and you know what I've found? Clean water and salt works better and is much less stressful for the fish. The mela/pima combo can and will deplete o2, so Id skip it altogether.

looks like he's staring to heal up though. id give him whatever he'll eat for the time being. Once he's healthy, you can retrain him for specific food
