They usually get 12 inches in a little over a year. They get 16 inches give or take.

^^^ 16" oscars aren't too common, IME. Most of the adult O's I see are more like 13-14". It takes very clean water, frequent feedings, a good varied diet, good genes, and quite a bit of time to get them to 16".

my biggest oscar right now is 13.5 inches long and I got it as a present 10/09

they top off at 16 inches full grown but most don't make it to 16 ....

so one in a 55 in not a good idea. i really want one but tank is not wide enough. would one do fine in a 55 breeder

No, 75 gallons is the absolut minimum, although 90-125 gallons is preferrable (especially when keeping 2 or more oscars).

Most will say a 75 for a single Oscar for llife , a 55 would work for a bit but you will end up having to upgrade to a 75 or larger eventually .

OMG you have no idea how many fish that i want that get a little to big for a 55 and a 75 would be fine
