Oscar Tank Mates??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Suppose I were to have an 11in Oscar and add a three inch fire mouth? Fire mouth won't fit in Oscars mouth but would it be okay? Also, I'm thinking of an acara if I can find one big enough, or a grow out tank

In General, oscars are pretty passive compared to their cichlid cousins. So make sure the oscar is the biggest. Dovii is definitely no. My dempsey does really well with my oscar

A three inch firemouth will be food for an 11 inch oscar. I've had an 11 inch oscar eat a 5 inch tinfoil barb. Make sure any potential tank mate has enough height as well as length. I'd say a six inch GT or JD would be your best bet. Or maybe a full size firemouth

I would suggest other Oscars. Observing them interact with each other and form a pecking order is very interesting. But some other choices not yet mentioned are Lyonsi, True Parrots, Nics, spilurus, Larger growing Geo's. From my experience Oscars can range in their temperament. some are much more aggresive than others.

Thanks for your input guys!! I'll be looking around for a medium JD and a full grown fire mouth :D

my oscar is about 10" and honestly there are several fish he could take out IF (or when..) he could catch them. I have a small bredohri that is 1" now that I threw in the tank when it was smaller just to dispose of him. So much for that... I have bought about 20 buenos aires (10 at a time) and over a period of time all of them have become food but 1.. If the fish is smart or fast, theres a good chance they can avoid being food. I switched over to giant danios and all though he tries to snag one every now and then, they are all still alive. This is all just based on my experience, I suppose its hit or miss but Ive owned several oscars and they are not exactly the most skilled predators.

Okay okay one more question... Oscar and giant gourami? Yes no maybe?
