Oscar tankmates in a 75 or other fish instead

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How fast would a red tailed or rainbow shark grow? Would it be able to keep up with and oscar or if I get a shark should I get it early and let it grow out before getting the oscar?

I like how the op says that he doesn't like silver dollars and such, and people keep on suggesting them. If you want a cat with the oscar you can ge a featherfin or a four line pim. They are big and assertive enough to hang with most oscars. He can even have another cichlid buddy in the tank, a midsized one like a con or firemouth would be cool to.

Get an Oscar if you want, it's your tank and is your final decision. I have had Severums with my Oscars. My oscars know that the docile Sev isn't going to compete with their food, so they don't bother him. And Sevs get a decent size too.

too slender body shape, even if he can't swallow it he will probably try as he grows. will not keep up with oscar growth rate and max out at half his size, ime. redtail cat or arowana grow way too big for a 75. i like the suggestion of the 4 line pimelodid cat for a suitable tankmate, great fish and will not be cramped in your tank.

I have 5 redhooks in a 75 right now and I wont suggest anyone to follow suit. I bought them before my MFK times and did'nt realize what I had got. I started with three and it was a war zone in my tank and had to get more to disperse aggression. It works but they really need a longer tank. I am just trying to hold off till I can upgrade. They are spastic and need room to swim. As #'s go, 5 is bare minimum IME. I know you dont want them anyway, but thought I'd share my experiences for everyone saying to get them.
