Oscar tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think I would go with the firemouth or a female convict. But being cichlids its hard to say if they will even get along. I think if u want tankmates u should think about upgrading. You might be able to do a bottom feeder but having an oscar it might be a little hard to get food for them.

i still say male Convicts over female convicts... if you go with a Con.

I wouldnt get a raph cat if your wanting something entertaining but Syno cats get a good size and are very cool.

I have two female cons, they go into their breeding routine, lay eggs get pi$$y still. If I had known then what I know now, I would have chose the males. When one lays eggs they both defend them, then when those go bad the other female lays her eggs and they both defend them till those go bad. I will am in the middle of trying to rehome the two now.

Eventually one of my O's ended up eating my female convict. I didn't think it was going to happen because they were in the same tanks ever since they were juvies... but when the O's got big enough, I guess they couldn't help themselves.

Granted, I'm sure others might have had better success in keeping the two together than I did.

Both good examples of why the male Cons are the way to go. They get much bigger than the females and dont lay eggs =)

How about 3-4 silver dollars? The lfs near my house has some 3-4 inch ones right now. I hear they are good fish to keep with larger fish due to their shape. Would that be too much In my 75 though?

Silver dollar could work out. Just keep in mind, they will grow to 6" or so and they have a nasty habit of banging their face into the glass in shorter tanks when the startle. But i've kept silver dollars with oscars before, no problems at all.

I figured they were compatible. my bigger concern is if this would overpopulate my 75 gallon.

From a bioload standpoint, it would definitely be pushing it, but not impossible with good over filtration. From an aggression standpoint, should still be okay. Now as someone said above, they tend to startle easily and because of their ability to generate bursts of speed very quickly, there could be some injury/death issues involved in tanks under 6' long.

I had not considered the smaller size of females to be Oscar snack size. Having said that, males are definitely possible, but I recommend no more than 2. Males are going to stake larger plots of territory and these will definitely overlap into the oscar's territory (which honestly will very likely be the entire tank), so having plenty of rock caves to hide in or break line of sight is a must. Plants will not likely stay rooted with an Oscar. Even those weighed down by rocks will more than likely be uprooted. However, every cichlid is different, so you could always try fake plants.
