Oscar tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 29 gallon with a 3 inch firemouth and five 1.5 inch tiger barbs. The only bichirs I can find locally are roughly 3 inches. Could I grow one out In there to 6 inches and then throw him in with the Oscar?

Your tiger barbs will only be eaten so don't even try mixing the bichir with them. Just buy an adult Senegal when your Oscar has reached its bulk size.

Ya kinda what I figured. I'm a bit nervous about adding something with him. He's really a big wuss. He is very easily startled and just turning on the lights or opening the lid to the tank can freak him out. Maybe a smaller fish with him will give him some much needed confidence lol. Very different than my buttikoferi who will bite that hand hat feeds him and smash the side of the tank.

Despite what I read in this thread, I have seen an Oscar and Green Terror share a 75g tank without issue. The GT was introduced at only an inch or so though, and the Oscar had to have been at least 4.5inches at the time. The O is now around 10 inches, and the GT about 5.5-6 inches.

That said, I couldn't imagine a case coming closer to the threshold than these two sharing a 75g aquarium....
Definitely couldn't add a single addidtional creature to the mix, and you better have sufficient filtration.

If not, simply don't buy the fish. Everytime I see an Oscar stuffed into a 20g petstore tank I want to give the owner a solid *****slap. The old 5-across the-eyes.
Like to see a human try and live in a phonebooth for aleven just a couple days.

What about a gulper cat? Smaller tankmates will be lunch for sure but the o will be fine.

I don't know man. I have a fear that my O could end being gulped. Anyone else think this would be ok? Maybe due to the body height of an Oscar he would be too difficult to fit in a gulper mouth? The gulper cats are super cool.

Is there a catfish that I could keep in the 75 with him? I really like catfish by I feel like the majority of them get much larger than I can handle.

I had mentioned earlier - a Synodontis Angelicus. Beautiful fish, won't kill oscar but shouldn't be bullied either. More active than Raphael Cat.

Or, I still think a nice 9-12" bichir would do the trick
