Oscar tankmates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
oops. didnt know geophagus had to be in groups. really? one t-bar is to much? they get about the size of a convict right?

Yeah. If you want to see the best behavior and coloration on geos, they need groups of 6+. I will have a group of 8 red head geo tapajos in a few weeks and I have seen pictures of their parents. Absolutely gorgeous.

T-bar will get a bit bigger than convict. Key difference is that convicts are relatively placid when kept without other convicts. They are only monsters when they breed. A t-bar is more aggressive than a lone convict, but not as bad as a breeding convict.

What about a 1:3 group of red hump eartheaters geos as the are only aggressive towards their own species and are not terratorial & dony grow to big

Still too much to be kept with an Oscar. By themselves they would be fine, but the Oscar just takes up so much territory. And at his current size, he will not like tolerate much as far as new tankmates go.

Catfish are great companions to oscars, due to the way oscars eat. A bottom feeder will prevent you from vacuuming every day. I hate plecos tho. Boring little poop machines. I'm not sure what catfish would be best for a 75, but I've kept black channel cats with mine in the past with success.

I have heard people call plecos poop machines that leave strings all over but mine is about 8 inches now and he still doesn't leave strings of poop and really dont even see it till I vacuum the tank and still cant tell his from the other fishes. Perhaps its because he still has a lot of growing to do, but I just dont see it from my Sail Fin Pleco.

If I put in 2 or more male cons wouldnt they fight constantly?

no they should be fine especially in a 75. I always keep small groups of all male or all female cons in tanks. the females sometimes pair up with eachother and you get agression there but as long as you have no female cons you will be fine. I just wouldnt keep more than 3 with your current setup.
