Oscar with a BGK...opinions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I also have had no problems w/ oscar w/ my BGK, even with a trimac and a jag, albeit they were shorter, by about half, than the BGK. the BGK actually defends its "territory" (wherever it wants to be) against anything, even the cichlids and they never bother it. it doesn't attack anything, though.

I'm such a sap. Our Ghost Knife is so old (about 16 years) so I am overprotective with him...even though all our other fish get right out of his way...except a crusty old Albino Cory that seems to feel that the Ghost Knife should go around him...and he does. I also have a TSN Catfish though and I put an Oscar in with him and they are fine. I socialized the Catfish (18" maybe 19") first by handfeeding, petting him etc, while I grew out the Oscar. I also have a large goldfish in that tank though as a buffer. If I were to start with a new Ghost Knife though and their sizes/personalities were compatible, I would put an Oscar in with a Ghost Knife. Risks are okay...IF...they are calculated risks.

well i just added the BGK a couple of hours ago. BGK is about 5-6" and the oscar stayed clear of him. looked actually afraid of him like what the hell is that. BGK searched for a cave, got kicked out of one by the watermelon pleco but found one he liked and has been just chillin in there. lights are off and i'll check back in the morning. unfortunatley this tank is at my office. i cant wait to move so i can set up my next tank.

the oscar will eat the bgk so dont try it :)
yes I can attest to this. My 4 year old decided Oscar wanted some cheetos....and he did. From that day on he quit eating pellets and flake food. We now feed him meats and rosie reds.

hey thats not what I was trying to quote. I was trying to quote that Oscars will eat anything!!!!!!!!!

Have any of you guys seen a BGK fight? Fear for your Cichlids not your knife…

My BGK is pushing 12 inches, and will stand up to any other fish that bothers it. They are "peaceful" to a point. It "rars" up with huge mouth agape, swirling and jabbing--If I were any of the others (p. polleni that killed my O, 2 mid-sized Snooks, some big-*** sevs and a 14 inch clown knife . . . . I'd leave well enough alone.

I can't see this combo working, but let us know.
