Oscar with a BGK...opinions?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don’t understand why people post doubts not based on experience when many people have posted the opposite based on experience…

Perhaps because Oscars are known to beat up any fish in their territory that they can?

I've kept a BGK in my tanks before with no problems. I'm talking Crenicichla, Bay Snook, Red Terror, Hoplarchus psittacus, Firemouth, Salvini tank. So yeah, they are pretty buff fish, can handle their own. Most fish just leave them alone. Just don't be stupid and stick one that is rediculously smaller than the other predatory fish and you should be fine. They have a fairly decent growth rate, so they should be able to keep up with the other fish as well.

I respect your thoughts as your thoughts, and it’s respectable that you are leaning to the conservative side… If one didn’t have experienced individuals to seek input from this is the way to go…

But the OP is seeking input from those with experience… and in this thread it has consistently been presented that those with experience have met with success…

Experience beats out speculation every time…

oscar and BGK is an okay combo but they get huge... the O needs the 75 to himself... the pleco get rid of it... its a pooping machine and will distroy your water quality much faster then the O.... if your going to house them for life then NO... unless you plan to upgrade for the BGK and O minimum 150-180 i say for such a large fish... max size is 24 inches

lol im not getting rid of the pleco.

so far so good. the BGK is just hanging out on a couple of caves. one being the pleco cave, i guess the pleco gave up trying to kick him out. BGK just ate a good amount of blood worms. first day with the lights on so we will see how the oscar acts. so far just midly curious. he goes down to peek his head in the cave and backs away. when i put the blood worms in he casualy sucked some up gave the BGK no attention.

he is bigger than my oscar

I have a BGK with a 8" oscar and a 13" RTC and everyone is content. They are currently in a 75 also.

I know I know tank is waaaaay to small for the fish i have, but i'll be building a pond when i move into a house in a few months.

i rearranged the whole tank and added 3 caves right before i put the BGK in. i shut off the lights and kept them for 2 days after adding the BGK. hopefully that helped with the oscars territory.

Great stuff EVP. I think when someone puts in the extra vigilence, like you are doing, you can't go wrong. ;) If something begins to look not okay, you will catch it and deal with it. I'm sure things feel differently today than they did a few days ago.

I remember when we put our Oscar in with our TSN......I was so worried, but we had done our homework with both fish and it worked out perfectly.

I use my training with rescued large breed dogs to make sure I am as careful as I can be. I still can't believe that I love Monster Fish on par with dogs.
