Oscar with a deformed face?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a Bleeding Heart Tetra like that who lived for 4 or 5 years. I don't know how he did it. He couldn't close his mouth fully.

Here's the thing, you can cull it or care for it - and either of those choices is fine. No judgement.

The only thing you should not do is breed it and sell the fry.

That would not be good - in my opinion.

Oh yeah, no way I would breed it. I'll just try to take care of it for as long as it lives. He doesn't look like he's really struggling or anything.

Someone in the area must be breeding deformed Oscars because I just saw another posting on CL about somwone needing to get rid of a deformed Oscar. Might pick him up a friend. I didn't know this was a common thing.

Just know the risks of adding the second deformed to the tank. If they just happen to be male/female and get friendly, you know what might be coming.

Well, good on you for deciding to save him. As long as he can eat ok and doesn't appear to be suffering in anyway I say go for it.

Maybe a chain pet store had them and someone unwittingly bought them? Just a thought.

Not sure. To be honest, the ad said free tank, filter but I had to take the fish. I didn't even look at the fish closely (and the living room was dark) until I got everything home. It was a 2 hours round trip. I texted them and asked them about it when I looked at the fish's face closely but no reply.
