There is a big oscar at a LFS which I want to save. I know he's going to die in there and I feel terrible every time I see him. He has really bad holes on his head and I was just wondering if he'll recover if I buy him?

you mean HITH
yes can be saved
some holes may scar or just go away like nothing happened
most likly scar if its really bad
never used meds but good water quality water changes should come around

No I mean HLLE. It's the proper name. Head and lateral line erosion. HITH is hole in the head disease which is a common name for HLLE.

This is why people shouldn't get "the minimum-sized tank." Within a year a problem arises: change the water three times a week, let the fish get sick, or trade it in. As though it's a video game rental and not a living being who was not created to amuse us.

Oscars can recover from HLLE with low nitrates and good nutrition. Boyd Vita Chem is recommended by many. (Soak pellets, veggie rounds, and freeze-dried krill with it. You don't need to pour it in the water.)

Adopting an Oscar is commendable. I salute you.

Yes i hope U do it ..And best of luck..I rescued a 10 year old Goldfish from the in- laws that was being killed by a KOI..nursed him back to health..when i got him his whole tail was gone!..and it came back more beautiful then ever..I say do it!

Do it, it can be saved and a buddy of mine does that all the time..I think he has 12 Oscars now that hes has gotten from lfs and saved :headbang2

My friend is buying him for as a birthday gift and named him flower child. XD
I'm glad he can be saved and he'll have a nice home all to himself.

best of luck to you i have 6 oscars and am trying to heal them they were all presents from clients who picked them up at a store of broke up with theyre boyfriend/girlfriend....and the one has it realy bad...ive been working on him for a year and have had some success with healing one of his big hole completly ......i did it through a varied diet consisting of anything but feeders......and alot of watter changes and salt....also i have removed carbon filtration from that tank because i read an article that said it may be linked to the diseases.........

I read that as well about the carbon but I know many people who use carbon and there oscars are fine.
