I asked one of my advisors (a very knowledgeable fish vet) about the carbon myth and HLLE. She said that myth has pretty much been busted; however, if you buy carbon and don't rinse it well, then the dust can act as an abrasive to the slime coat on the skin and make it more susceptible to infection. I would have no worries about using carbon, except to rinse it very thoroughly before putting it in the tank.
The sensory pit and lateral line erosions occur as an "end stage" effect of the disease after it has traveled through the fishes' intestinal tract. If he's made it this far and survived, then hopefully pristine water quality and better nutrition will help him heal. He'll probably still be heavily scarred from the existing lesions, but at least they won't get any worse.
