Oscar with HLLE. Saveable?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I asked one of my advisors (a very knowledgeable fish vet) about the carbon myth and HLLE. She said that myth has pretty much been busted; however, if you buy carbon and don't rinse it well, then the dust can act as an abrasive to the slime coat on the skin and make it more susceptible to infection. I would have no worries about using carbon, except to rinse it very thoroughly before putting it in the tank.

The sensory pit and lateral line erosions occur as an "end stage" effect of the disease after it has traveled through the fishes' intestinal tract. If he's made it this far and survived, then hopefully pristine water quality and better nutrition will help him heal. He'll probably still be heavily scarred from the existing lesions, but at least they won't get any worse. :)

not have the risk of him getting parasites,

I was feeding him tetras. I have had them for awhile and have tried getting rid of them but no one would take them, so he got a fresh meal. So I know he isn't getting parasites from them. Also when I first got him I used melafix for 4 days and now I'm using ick ease because some of his tank mates are scratching.

oh ok gotcha then yeah thats fine but i would still fast him and get him onto pellets first and then once he is eating the pellets you can give tetras now and then to supplement his diet, and for future reference so you dont have to go out and spend money on ich meds, ich (except in some rare extreme cases) can be cured by simply adding salt to the tank (can be regular table salt just make sure caking agent isnt yellow prussiate, i buy the kind in the blue box) and raising the temperature to 85F and adding 1tsp per gallon the first day and a 2nd tsp per gallon the next day, if its a severe case you can go up to 3 but i have never had to do this and just let it stay that way for 2 weeks, and replace any salt taken out if you have to do a waterchange

Tried that and they still scratch. I added it mainly as a precaution. not sure they even have anything yet, they just seemed like it.

^ Salt is great for many things, but I'd be hesitant to add actual medications (like Ich meds) unless I'm very confident about the problem going on. Meds can often screw up parameters in your tank, such as dissolved oxygen levels, pH, and beneficial bacteria. In the future, it might be best to stick with just salt and water changes. :)

Sounds good, let us know how you and the Oscar get on :) and good luck

He seems to be healing up but I lost one of my baby oscars I just bought. =[
He was perfectly healthy but I guess he was to small for the tank because my convict killed him.

yeah cons can be mad aggressive and baby Os are usually really passive, i wouldnt put an O with a con unless it was much bigger

The oscar was 1 inch and the con was like 1.5
