No its not shy, lives in my 10x2x2 with another couple of Oscars and Cichlids

You will definitely get splashed. If there's one thing large cichlids love to do, it's splash you at really inconvenient times. They will get over-excited about mealtime and throw water all over you.

yes, be careful with your Oscars, you need a good lid so they dont jump out looking for food.

Lid? Lol my tank doesn't have a lid at all the glass tops didn't come with it..there's a heavy wood canopy over it, and fiberglass screening over the back..ill get the local glass shop to make me 2 tops...to prevent it from jumpijng into my lights and hurting himself

yes, ive seem lots of stories of people finding them dried out by lights or down the back of tanks. I lost an aro that way in my early fish keeping days

yes, if they jump up and hit them they will drop back in. they dont normally do it, its just incase

Hinged glass tops should be fine. That's what I use on all my tanks.

I measured my tank I have t he width and length for the glass tops..but how thick should the glass be? ty
