oscars and red devil?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
IME red devils are much to aggressive for Oscars, but every situation is different. I tried in a 135g with 2 oscar 1 rd and 2 jack dempsey it did not end well for the oscars. Both eneded maimed with one blinded that was over the course of one night. Oscars imo are like yappy dogs all bark no bite.

i currently have a 5" red devil in a community and he gets bullied by smaller fish sometimes. he/she is much more mild mannered than most of my fish

thanks for all the advise..planning on giving away the oscars or bringing them back to the store for credit currently have the oscars in another tank with a divider...and the red devil is really entertaining digging and spitting out gravel behind the driftwod i guess making his sleeping grounds??? lol really nice fish

I totally agree, either fish make great wet pets but the Oscar will get too big for the 75, so keep the RD

X2!!!
IME my RD/Midas usually starts showinbg the inner devil with tank mates a few weeks in.
If left alone, it will take longer, My newest killed tank mates a few weeks in, & had no settled down being on it's own.

My largest male used to get bullied by my largest GT(sold) but once he hit the 4-5" mark, "the crap hit the fan".
He nearly killed my GT who was more than double his size, the GT went on a hunger strike so I sold him.
I loved that GT but he was so stressed even in his own tank.
The RD traumatized him for life I think.

My 7-8 red devil gets along with my other central american cichlds including a 3-4 inch convict. I was concerned about the aggresion of the red devil because everyone told me that it will be very aggresive.

I guess it depends on the fish.

You'll like the behavior of the RD. It will become more entertaining as it grows in size and confidence. I think a few people arguing about keeping the RD and the two Oscars weren't taking into consideration the size of the 75 gallon that they would have been kept together in. I think you chose the better option since you aren't planning on getting a larger tank. I hope you continue to enjoy the RD.

well they are getting use to each other .i had red devils before my oscars and they were 3in and my oscars were 1 1/2 and two days later my oscar died because the red devil was bigger .if there the same size i doubt anything will happen

Good choice!!!
I luv the pattern on mohawk.
My largest RD doesn't mind smaller tankmates. who know to give him space.
:D
