OSCARS FULL SIZE!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
First offf I wanted to Sa awesome pics everyone Oscars have always been one of my favorite cichlids!

But I did also want to bring up I am sure size of a fsih tank that oscars are held plays a role with HITH but... I do not think that it is the only cause because even johnptc's oscars have gotten HITH and they are in a 10,000 gallon tank .

I have kept Oscars off and on for 15 years now the biggest oscar i have kept was 14" right now I have 2 currently a female albino tiger she was 1 inch wen I got her she is now pushing 8 inches and she is 7 months old I bought a Black tiger oscar ( that turned out to be male) at the same time out of a different tank and he is 8.5- 9 inchs right now, they laid eggs quite a few times but none has has lived.

When I bought them at 1 inch I had them in a 29 gallon grow out tank till they hit the 4 inch mark and then moved them into a 250 gallon preformed pond that they love , they are in there with a single pleco, I feed them hikari gold, shrimp, I also breed my own guppies for them as well, and I also feen them tetra cichlid sticks( they really LOVE them , tehy will both let me hand feed them as long as I am holding the tetra cichlid sticks or shrimp lol) .

On a sad note upon checking them out this morning I noticed the male( black tiger) has 2 small oval shaped indentions apeared on his lower back fin I am hoping it is not HITH ... I can't post pictures I do not have the right usb cord to connect my camera to my pc...

They are in a 250 gallon I do 2 weekley 50% water changes, the temp is at 80 degrees they have 4 fx5's and a power head and I also have two 5" inch round bubble stones for even more air , I feed 2 times a day morning and night and I do not leave excess food in their pond ... I really can't see where I have done anything wrong ....

I am sorry for the little derail I just wanted to post in this thread for the best (under rated by most.... because they are so common I beleave is why.) cichlid I have ever owned .

I had a pretty exotic tank for a long time, with my only common fish being one jack dempsey. It got pretty boring and I decided that there was only one type of fish that really knew how to party, and that was the oscar. He has brought a lot of personality since he arrived last summer, and has grown to a whopping 11 inches. Ive said it before, regardless of the crap these guys catch, they are great fish to keep. They may not be vicious but they are fun and annoy the other fish enough to keep them active. I wish he didn't eat my aro, but whatever, I forgive him. Either way, like I said, he was a squirt last summer when I picked him up and now around 8 months later he is pushing a foot. He's in a 220 with 3 other fish so he's got the room I guess. Also I have seen 15-16 inchers a handful of times and they look great at that size. Big fat goofy fish.

Hopefully it's not HITH. I don't think anyone really knows what causes it, I've heard many theories including diet, water quality, space, carbon filter media etc. etc. but I have seen Oscars kept in superb conditions end up with HITH and Oscars kept in poor conditions with no HITH. Maybe it is something to do with breeding? A hereditary disease we have no control over? All we cqan do is keep them in the best conditions possible and hope for the best!
