You can probably make it until October. The 2 O's could get to about 8-10" before they were really cramped in that 55. Agreed however that you'll need to stay on top of water changes and be well-filtered. Re: another tank, you're better off with the 40 (it's a 40 breeder right?). Larger footprint than the 55, though not as tall. Despite the lesser gallonage the fish will actually have more room.

that's good to know.. Right now I am using a empior 400 and a top fin 60(came with the tank it dose 300gph) so I am filtering 700gph.. I have a 200w heater also I have a large roman half castel in the middle of the tank maybe that will help seprate them for terotory.. I hope the O's will mate don't know if I have a h/she and don't know if the new O is a h/she also..

I have not decided if I am going to do this yet or not.. I have a chance to get a free Tiger O if I don't take him who konw's where it will end up at..

i forgot to mention that i am talking about uk gallons not us gallons so how big (in ") is a 55us gal tank

not sure will mesure tonight.. unless some one else knows..

Footprint for 55 (US) gallon tank = 48 inches x 12.5 inches

My advice is to save up for a tank that is going to be big enough for two fully grown oscars first instead of buying more smaller tanks.

Personally I wouldnt buy any fish you cant properly house. A 125 gallon is minimum for 2 full grown oscars. ;)

Here is a article writen by me:
oscars http://www.aquariumboard.com/forums/articles/4240.htm

The problem with keeping them in the 55gallon till you get something else is.

1 you may not be able to get a larger tank down the road.
2 One oscar will likely grow faster than the other and become more dominant.
3 55g is not enough territory for both Oscars they will fight before too long.

Oscars are pretty easy to come by these days. I would take them back and wait till you have room for their proper care.:)

now i see why you say a 55gal is too small at only 12.5" wide! The minimum tank for a pair of oscars is 48"x18"x18" and they will probably outgrow this after a while.Mine are housed in a 60"x24"x24" which is 125uk gals and they do enjoy the space!:D
