Oscars do grow as big as their tank will allow. But their organs, will continue to grow to a full size. Usually when this happens the internal organs can sustain serious damage leading to a slow and painful death. Many "stunted" fish look terrible as well.
Also, oscars are highly territorial, and in general do not tolerate tank mates. Working at a LFS talking to several large oscar owners a day, I have learned that they will either kill their tank mates, or much less likely be killed by the tank mate. When fish become large and territorial, you aren't going to have a happy mix.
Generally, adult oscars never mix in tanks less than 36" long and 18" wide. And surprisingly often, they will kill each other in 6' tanks, but this isn't always the case.
Territory is also set out in surface area rather than gallonage. So a taller tank isn't going to allow more territory than a shallower tank with the same length and width.
As for saying the labels are right and the forum is wrong. It's like trusting a used car salesman more than the original owner. Us on MFK are true hobbiests who try to learn to take the best possible care of their fish. Petsmart and Petco and most other retail stores are retail stores before they are hobbiests. Having an oscar at home doesn't make the store any money, but selling them does.
