I am interested in getting an oscar, and I was wondering if a 55gal would be sufficient? The tank would be bare maybe except for a few other fish and the O' would be the only fish in the tank. I breed bettas, and have heard that some betta breeders use oscars as a way to euthanize the bettas, is this true?
Thanks! :D

if youre getting tigers it would be too small, but maybe a red oscar?? It would be pretty cramped for a full grown 'O'

55 gallon would be kind of small for an Oscar, the tank would be a foot wide and Oscars grow to be a bit longer than a foot, look into a 75 gallon. Or see if you can get one of those wide 55 breeder tanks.

what do you mean too small for a tiger? They both are the same unless you are meaning the wild varient, otherwise I believe they grow the same size.

I was under the impression that reds wont get quite as big as the tigers, and I havent seen a red bigger (or as big ) than most of the big tigers that ive seen. I could be wrong. If they do get as big as tigers, then i would say no to the typical 55 gal, because of lack of room to turn around

Red, tiger, albino, common...they all grow the same size. A 55g will work for an oscar, one oscar alone. It is a bit narrow, so something wider is of course better but keep in mind that oscars can turn on a dime so he shouldn't have that big of a problem.

Most Oscars grow about a feet long, mine is around that size now. And a 55 gallon tank is suffecient. A standard 55 and 75 is believed to be the same size, but the 75 is taller, so it's actually not much of a difference.

A standard 75g is the same height and length of a 55g, the difference is that it is 18" wide rather then 12" allowing for more turning space. A 50g would also work for an oscar, it is a foot shorter in length but allows more turning room because it is 18" wide.
