Oscars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i once saw a 12" oscar in a 5 gallon fish bowl no filtration the lady keep it in her kitchen and every day she would empty the bowl and refill it i was not into fish keeping at the time so i thought it was funny knowing what i know now i have no clue how this fish survived

oscars are big pretty fish that like to swim they cant really do that as adults in a 55

i think if you keep a oscar for about a year (time to reach 12") you will want to get a larger tank for it

Glasscages also sells 50g talls (36"Lx18"W) and 50g longs (48"Lx 18"W) that would work, They are $70 not counting shipping.

i had two full grown tigers in a 55 and they did just fine untill the power went out one night and my filtration system went down.

Thanks, i checked out glass cages they have some great prices, I am so excited i can't wait to get my "O" :woot:

If youre buying the tank get a 75.In a 50 or 55 by the time he gets to 8" your gonna feel bad for him seeig how cramped he looks an get a 75 anyway

I've always calculated Oscars and Gallons this way !

55gal x1 Oscar
80gal x2 Oscar's
105gal x3 Oscar 's
130gal x4 Oscar's

25Gal per Oscar you want to keep extra, Keep Decor to a minimum unless you have the space !

forget oscars man get a red devil they are a much more aggresive fish and better looking.

Yeah Right! :screwy: The tank alone would be 12" so there would be no way for the Oscar to move at all.

A 55 is the bare minimum for 1 Oscar. But it will work. Seriously though, if the price difference isnt to great, i would shoot for a 75 myself.

If all you get for filtration is one Aquaclear, you had better shoot for about 10X turnover rate. In other words, about 550 gallons per hour. I know that sounds crazy, but Oscars are kings of crap. They are total slobs and you'll eventually see what i mean.

You would be much better off getting an Aquaclear and a canister filter. Canisters provide much more biological filtration. But the HOB will be good for polishing and extra beneficial bacteria.

Personally i think RDs are Fugly! But to each his own I guess.

Carbon causing HITH has never been proven, but since it is not entirely necessary to have, i dont use it either. Better safe then sorry. Oscars certainly are suseptable to HITH and whatever you can do to prevent it is good. Normally though it is from a lack of proper nutrition. Dont ever just feed pellets alone. Supplement the diet with other types of food as well. Shrimp, earthworms, crickets, and even shelled peas once in a while for digestion.

Good luck!
