Our bichirs - pix of all but one

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What is the major difference between the ansorgii and enlicheri?
Sorry these didn't show up the way I had intended. If you go to the "Big Endli" thread, these pics are bigger.

I want a bichir colection too.

What size tanks do you have.

I mean..

What size tanks and which bichirs are in which tanks.

Thanks :) :)

the rows of squarish blotches along both sides and the back are unique to ansorgii.

O.k. thanks.
Another set of dumb questions though, the ones in my pics are definately endlicheri endlicheri? If not, what's the difference between them and endlicheri congicus?

well asking Q's and sharing what we know are what we're here for :)

yes the ones in your pics are definitely endlicheri endlicheri, possibly volta variant judging from head shape and faded stripes (but i'm no expert on endli endli variants).

differences between endlicheri endlicheri and endlicheri congicus are pretty obvious, but in writing it might not seem like much. i'll try my best :D the head shape of congicus is different, taller and sometimes not as wide (but as mentioned volta endli endli also has a taller head while guinea endli endli can have flat and wide head). stripes of congicus are usually faded. note the word 'usually' cause there will be exception. e.g. endli endli can have faded stripes like the volta, while some congicus can have pretty bold stripes. There are almost always more stripes on congicus, and the stripes are almost always narrower than endli endli.

basically there will be exception to every criteria, but when you put the whole package together, it's usually unmistakable.

Thank you very much! I will have to get some more pics 'cause there are some pretty distinct differences in the 4 endlis in that tank. One of them especially is much wider than the others, particularly around the head. He's also longer but not by all that much really.

I thought I had a pretty good knowledge base on aquarium fish ( been working in a LFS for 10 years and been keeping fish for 20 years) but you guys on here have seriously humbled me! I love this site!

no problem. more pics would be nice. keep in mind that there are still a decent amount of individual variations even within the same endli endli variant.

Absolutely. More pics on their on thread in the next few days!:)

Tank size and fish -

Yes I know these tanks are nowhere big enough for these fish when they are adults. I'm planning on upgrading ;)

Right now... 20 gallon has the babies. 2 ornates and 2 senegals under 5 inches. 30 gallon i'm using as a hospital tank for a 14'' congicus. As soon as she heals she's going back to one of the 55s. One 55 has the larger fish. A 13'' endli endli, a 14'' lapradei, a 12'' lapradei (those two aren't interested in a bigger tank... they're happy staying in one spot and training me to drop the food right by them so they don't have to swim around to find it... lazy butts), 3 10'' palmas subspecies (Buettekoferi/Palmas Palmas). Also hanging out in that tank are two baby jag cichlids under 3'' and a baby silver aro I'm growing out for trade @ the LFS. The teen tank is also a 55 and is overstocked, I know. Everyone gets along and stays healthy though. 2 8'' senegals, 2 mokelembembe (1 6'', 1 8''), 2 palmas polli (1 5'', one 8''), 2 weeksii (7ish''), 1 8'' endli endli, 1 9'' palmas buett, and 2 8'' delz. To give the fish more room, I layed off heavily on tank deco. They have a big log and a plant... and that's it.

Future plans... two massive tanks, one upper jaw, one lower jaw/ornate tank... whenever we move :)
