For a 100g tank?

I have narrowed to 3 which would be best?
XP4 - £115 - 600/700 litres - I could easily transfer from the current XP3, no real special features.
FX5 - £169 - 1500 litres - easily and locally obtained, heard good and bad
Eheim External Filter 3e 2078 + USB Interface - £199.95 delivered. Up to 700 litre - less literage than FX5 but have always heard amazing things about eheims and never a bad thing..
Lastly MIGHT stretch to a EHEIM 2080 PROFESSIONAL 3 for about £260 ishhh though that would be stretching it...I think I would want to know how much better the 2080 is over the 2078..

I have a Rena XP4 and I would say to NOT go with it. Its not that it's a bad filter, but I have had some trouble with it and if you do a Google search, most every "hit" is from someone asking for help with the filter. Plus, I really don't get the whole basket in a basket concept. They claim that there is almost no bypass, but with the exception of the first basket (with the filter pads), all other media looks like 4 peas in the bottom of a pea can. Yes, water flows through the baskets, but I can't help but think its not very effective.

Before this, I had a Magnum 350 by Marineland. I absolutely loved that filter and had no issues until it just wore out. It had some interesting features, some options and I liked how the flow/media was set up.

Again, the Rena isn't a bad filter...just that it seems to me that they tried to imitate features from other filters and came up a bit short. (I do like how you can add their inline heater to the intake...but then again, after seeing my intakes, not sure I want all that gunk in my heater!).

Sorry for the long post...it was a long night trying to get my filter going again after a water change.

Good luck to you!

I would vote against the Rena XP4. Had to many issues with mine. It's now broken and collecting dust.

I have experience with the Ehiems. They are the top of the line filters in most cases. They are SUPER quite and last forever. I have a smaller one that is nearing 20 years in age and runs perfectly.

Last but definitely not least is the mighty FX5. I have no experince with them personally but I hear great things. They are powerful and fairly reliable from what I gather.

Another vote for the eheim,I have always used eheims,2026 and 2x 2028 and 2217 and the 2078 is my next purchase when my new tank arrives.
That seem a very good price for that as well,I would be interested to know where in the UK is doing it at that price.
I have no personal experience of the FX5 but have heard a few stories about the flow not being anywhere near what fluval say it is and them clogging up quickly.
But I see know need to change from eheims in the near future,as they have always served me well and in the unlikely event that there is a problem, spares are very easily available.
