spero, what do you have, a betta bowl?

Go at me all you like with your discovery channel **** but ive done both my fish grow faster lived longer show much much more color and not nearly as shy and never lost a single one. and i use silk plants white silica sand mixed with pea gravel 1 cm in size. i had 2 tanks running 150 gal with reg "normal" maintance and 150 with what im doing now same amount of fish same amout of food givin and by 4 months the regualr set up they grew to 3'' very shy color was avg. other tank they where at 6-7'' bright red bellys never hid when i came around and agressive all 8 where alive doing well where as there was only 5 left in the norm set up. after selling i got twice as much for my good 8 then i did my 5 the sold in 1 day the 5 i had to give to a pet shope for credit. and i started over angain now with a new batch of 8 and again doing great. i go by results not by what text books tell me to do.

my reds are 3.5" at 2 months *with water changes*

maybe water changes make things worse for you because you're tap water is crap.

there's no way you can do feedings for rbp's without vacuuming the gravel and doing water changes. The fish whisperer says your fish aren't happy.

sorry to barge in here but i own a water purification company and one of the steps we use is adding ozone to our 500gal storage tanks... so far i have been letting the water sit for a week or 2in the bottle before using it in my tank because i figured the ozone would kill not only the bad bacteria but the good aswell. anyone have a better idea about this then i do??

Nitrate is also consumed by algae, and several genus of bacteria have been found in freshwater sediment to utilize nitrate in an aerobic environment. However many of those convert the nitrate back into nitrite. But, poo that works its way into the substrate can be broken down anaerobically eliminating some nitrate.

Another point is that spero has been keeping his set up without water changes for a long period of time. Seeing as nitrate concentrations at 120ppm become toxic to fish, if no nitrate were being removed from the system, I imagine he would see some extreme negative effects on his fish.

I still believe in water changes (as I do them myself). But in mature tanks, I think there is reason to believe that balance is possible.

I am curious to see a test of the nitrates though.

i rigged a system that eliminates the need for water changes all together. and they have tons of sapce.
If you let this secret seep out, you may wind up filthy rich. Your method is not one which eliminates water changes. Test your nitrates.:banhim:
