ok im tired of the overflow on my tank. its absolutely retarded and has a new issue every single day!! :nilly::irked:
so im taking it all apart and redoing it all. i need you guys to tell me what i need please!
ok its a 120 gal tank with a drilled bottom and about a 1.5-2 in bulk head. the pipe that is in there is almost right up to the mian brace mybe a hair could fit between them. so i guess i will have to cut the pipe in half to get it out but then idk how i would get one back in. the main pipe is big. prob about 3 in and has a cap with three slits cut horizontally that sit under water when running.
here are my issues.....
one makes way too much noise when just set up like it is
i used sponges in the tube to fix that but the get clogged and over flow the tank :irked:
2nd when i do fix the noise it will last about a day before somethin goes goofy and it decides it wants to overflow the tank.
its really driving me crazy.
it runs ok with just my one pump that puts out about 600 gph but when i plug in my 2nd pump about 300 gph it goes goofy.
i really want the extra flow and just need some advice
either a simple fix or a total redo either way i dont want to hasle with it anymore.... its really pushing my buttons and making me think about selling the whole damn thing
so please help me out guys

IF you are looking for extra flow (current) in the tank....why not try a powerhead or Hydor Koalia? I use 2 of them in my 150....couldnt be happier?

As far as the overflow...noise seems to be a usual issue with them. Have you tried using a sponge insert in the overflow chamber? I would be used as a prefilter and also help dampen the noise

i am not worried about current just the amount of water goin thro my filter.
n i tried the sponge. it works for a while but gets clogged easily or compressed and pushed down into an elbow

Try doing one of the DIY methods for silencing the overflow in lieu of using the sponge. Google one of the following; Hofer Gurgle Buster, Durso Standpipe, or the Stockman standpipe.

you made a thread before right?

the reason it's overflowing your tank is because your clogging up the pipe with sponges and it cant handle the flow. thats why when you turn on the second pump it overflows.

as for noise, you should make a Durso standpipe. since its so close to the center brace, why not try offsetting the pipe with two 45 degree fittings?

yea i have before. and the durso needs a box to work right and to make sure water level is right. thats what mr durso said
and i was thinking about that but that would look wierd....
but wait... i have a new idea.... there is another drilled hole about a foot to the right where that pile of rocks is. its smaller... maybe 1.5 in bulkhead. would that be big enough to handle 900 ghp flow? i would just make a new pipe over there and it wouldnt drive me crazy anymore :) idk why i didnt think of this sooner....
my worry is the 1.5 in pipe wont be able to handle the flow
and canuck i was thinkin of painting it black. do you think blue would look better?

dude this is an easy fix. it will involve draining the tank most likely, but its easy to fix. leave the pipe in place, and just cut it somewhere in the middle. add your two 45-degree fittings so you move the pipe away from the center brace, then add the Durso or other type as mentioned.

as for the line that goes to the drip tray, not much you can do there if you cant get the line below water level. just add some filter pads to quiet it down

so you dont think the smaller bulk head could handle the flow?
i thought about the 45 thing but idk if that would look even worse that one pipe.

yeah you could do that if you want too, then add a durso to that pipe. it will be more than enough to handle the flow. ive used 1" on a 1000gph pump, and 1.5" on a 3400gph pump. youll be fine
