OK, lets start off with saying over stocking is a big NO NO!!!

This thread is about maybe a good side effect of over stocking!!

Lately and probaly way before I was a memeber of this site. We see alot of people asking about tank mates for FH's and other fish with that same aggression.

Something ive learned/seen on here was when people over stock their tanks, they are able to pull somethings people say arent possible.

Here is why I think the over stocking effect is true:

At one time I had ten pikes in a 90g along with other tank mates also. When I would post pics everyone would ask " how is the agreesion level. I would say its working out fine. At that point I thought I was like the pike god or something cause everybody said it wouldnt work. But after I did some moving around of some of the pikes and was left with only 4. It didnt take long before I was down to 3.

The point of all this is to say I think when you over stock. No one fish can feel like this is my house and gets territory towards other fish.

Whats ur opinion!!!!

It's pretty well established that this is generally true. It also gives you a huge bioload, and it's not an ideal environment for most fish. What else can you say?

Very true!!!

I was tring to see if infact this is true and also if this the only way to keep very agrressive fish together!!

Thanks for ur opinion!!!

first off, overstocking is not a "no no". its not recommended for novice keepers, and is "generally" frowned upon, but if done responsibly and proper measures are taken, it is a very common and successful practice. it really depends on how much youre willing to put into it.

"overstocking", does not always curb aggression with predators. some species just will not accept tank mates. and more importantly, some individual fish will not accept tank mates. aggression is always a case by case basis.

As always you seem to know ur stuff!!!

One thing about ur post tho, they come across being very agressive!!!

I have seen it done and seen it work in some cases with fish that "would never be able to be kept together" I can not say as a forsure thing but I can say that the theory is plausable .

I honestley do not have a problem with doing it if done responcibly and the owner of the fish does more frequent water changes vacuming substrate and the tank is over way over filtered .... what I basically mean is making sure the fishes water is really clean and the fish have a clean enviroment to live

I dont want to do it!!

I thought I could create a thread that when people want to know how they could pull off a ALL agrresive tank they would have somewhere to go for info. Cause I see it as a on going question.

Far as me ive learned that ill rather have a small bio-load. Its easier to keep the water right and requires less filter cleaning!!!

Thanks for ur input!!!

In my opinion, if your filter can handle the bio-load your fish produce, its not a problem. In addition, I think you should only overstock in a responsible manner, which means you should do frequent large water changes and monitor the water parameters constantly.

this has popped up on a lot of forums ive been to and it seems to work for the most part. there seems to be more failures with new world cichlids than old world cichlids being overstocked to control aggression though. i dont know if its the new worlds themselves, inexperience or a bit of both.
its not something ive personally tried, nor would i, because i dont like the thought of squeezing lots of large aggressive fish into an ill fitting glass cage and taking away their last shred of natural behaviour. plus the maintenance would drive me crazy.
but thats just my opinion.

im pretty sure i have read an article on this somewhere but i cant seem to find it. i will google some more when i have more time to try and find it.

Thanks!!!

This one just something I wanted to put on front street and also gain more knowledge about myself!!!!

Keep the good input coming!!!
