Overflow predicament

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I use this same overflow box. I dont use that black box on the inside. I just have two guards over the pipes. You dont really need them to sit how you want them to. These over flows have to be restarted every time via syphon when you do a water change anyway. If you take away the black box on the inside you may gain a little room for the pipes to sit better. The only problem with doing this is if you lose power when you arent home then you better be sure you have enough room in the sump for the water that will drain out till it stops which I do. I found that fish would bang into that black overflow box and mess it up from time to time on the inside. I'm sure if you didnt have enough room you could drill a syphon break into the clear pipe somewhere to stop it where you wanted it to stop. I have regular over flows also though. The problem would be what would happen if the power also came back on while you weren't home to restart the syphon on the over flow.

I have an ecotech marine pump and apparently they sell a battery backup that lasts 60 hours. Which I plan on being the next big thing i buy for the tank.

Well you know that drilling is the best option, so I would recommend that you make a jig and clamp it to your tank and start your holes in reverse. Use a battery powered drill and set the clutch accordingly so it doesn’t bind. Then set it in forward and drill your holes. If you’ve drilled glass then drilling acrylic shouldn’t be a problem.

I doubt that whether the tubes sitting flush will be an issue, as long as both ends are submerged, and air bubbles don't collect in the upper portion. The one below worked well for years..

I have the box sitting at an angle, resting on other tank.

But agree a drilled tank is much less likely to overflow on the flow than one with HOB overflow boxes.
Once I drilled one tank (glass) I quickly drilled 8 more, because of the worry of HOB overflow box malfunctions.

UPDATE:

So I had a local company come and drill two holes to install a Synergy Shadow overflow box. They did a great job! This video shows my efforts with dry fitting my PVC runs.

I have some of it glued already... just need to finish gluing the rest. I plan on letting it fully cure for 24 hours before water test.

Bean animal overflow. Put a small riser on the middle drain and a gate valve on the lowest drain.
The gate valve get a closed just enough to sustain a full shipon.

No leaks!

So I went with a slight variation of the Bean Animal overflow. Due to how my sump works, I wanted equal flow down both drains so in order to achieve that I went with 2 inch black PVC pipe and connected the U tubes that came with the Shadow overflow. I just need to adjust my water level a bit higher in my overflow box and it should be pretty darn quiet. Still though, I am making progress!
