overpriced!

I actually am going to disagree with the thought that high prices on fish such as RTC's that may not neccisarily be rare but just get that big and need that amount of dedication to keep. That encourages LFS to keep them in stock.. much higher profit margin for the LFS.. they are not going to "not keep them in stock" as a general rule because they get so big.

I think Bichir's as a general rule are likely over priced and SA cichlids to an extent. Both being "hot" commodities outside the FW rays right now. But as a general rule I on't think anything is obscenely overpriced 'cept zebra plecos.. and the market price on those is crashing.. and will crash until it stabalizes at a reasonable price with the captive breeding thats being done now. The market dictates the price as a general rule. fish don't stay over priced for long. or much of anything, until people try and control the market. I've spent close to 300$ in the past 6 months on fish. I'de spend more if I had it.. BUt I don't so I don't cry about it.. I enjoy what I have. and save/make plans to get what I want. One of those is a Tigrinus cat. Soo I will save my money.. bid my time... care for the fish in my current tanks. and when I am ready to invest the money and what is needed I will get the fish. and very liekly teh prices will only go up on them by then /shrug and thats what I will pay if I really want the fish still. Or I will find something else I'de rather have or is "worth the money" to me.

as long as people are willing to pay it.. the price will be dictated. these lfs that are grossly over priced or these private breeders that are will simply fall away, or develop a reputation for HQ animals and people who are willing to pay their prices.

It's not that they're too expensive, it's that you're too cheap!

Fish are worth what people will pay for them (like anything else). If it's too rich for your blood STFU and move on.

Honestly that's the truth. And I couldn't have said it better. Supply and demand.

you're both assuming that everyone sells them for the same price. most of us are refering to regular retailers and expensive breeders. if the hobby is meant to be expensive that's news to me. It's only expensive to those who make it so.

in fact each time I've traded hobbies it has become mroe economical. with my car I spent 10grand on it in upgrades over a 2 year period.

my computers I'd spend 1000$ every 4-6 months.

with the fish, I've yet to break 1000$ and that includes the pond, all my tanks, filters, heaters, fish, rock, driftwood, everything.

so making blanket statements that 200$+ fish purchases should be a normal part of the hobby is ridiculous imo. might as well be telling everyone to spend 10 grand in upgrades for their car.

now I would agree that fish like the rtc should be pricy to make sure that anyone buying one has the ability to house one. but some of the smaller fish really make no sense to me.

As with every hobby there are ways to do it cheaply. Make lots of friends that hook you up, bargain shop, wait for the right deal, etc. But for the people who go full force in any hobby it starts getting expensive. As with any other hobby.

I don't care how much you spend on this hobby. Do it as cheap as possible. But don't gripe just because you can't afford going rate for a fish and chalk it up to them being overpriced.

No one's telling anyone to get out of the hobby. We're saying you're being unreasonable with your expectations. Any hobby and yes I mean any hobby is or can be expensive depending on what you choose to do in that hobby. Just as with cars you can choose to have an integra or a viper.

wow this is really a thread ?

simple as this... You dont like , you dont buy... someone else will dont worry.

probably me lol

also im not rich but i have some expensive waterbabies...but i save and set aside money to buy the things i want... i work for the money and buy the things id like to have... and you have to admit a 500 stingray gets taking care of way better then a 5 dollar pacu...

fish like RTC and TSN should not be cheap or expensive they should be band from sale as 90% of the people who buy them cant take care of them the price of such fish means nothing

and RTC and TSN are cheap

its only a handful of fish that i would class as expensive that are not very hard to find

I couldn't agree more with this statement.

thats a very good point if you want the fish you would pay the money

if i saw a fish i had been looking at buying for ages and it was $100 over priced i would still buy

it just makes me :ROFL:when i see threads with people saying i was this real nice fish today but it was $20 to expencive i think to my self you let a fish you liked get away just to save $20 mad

Discus!!! IMO I just can not see the reason to pay anywhere form (prices I have personally seen) $30 into the hundreds of dollars for a fish the literally does Nothing, just float in the same spot all day long and only move to get food and that's only if it does not float to them first, they have no personality what so ever and catch a disease if you freaking blink the wrong way at them. To me discus are nothing more than an extremely overpriced joke. Sorry if I offended you but that's just my opinion.

id defiantly have to go with bichirs i was at a new lfs today and they had some 1-1.5” albino sens for $25 and another store with 2-3" sens for $20 when that store used to sell them for 5-6 bucks. But I just offer them something and if the want to sell it they’ll sell it theirs a store about an hour away from me had a giraffe cat for 80 and was their for several months when I would go in I would check him out and one guy would come up to me and say you no you want him and that that was a steal at that price last time I went in I told him id give him 30 for him and he sold him to me, But if its something I want ill pay a little to get it.

no point in moaning about one shops prices

different places different times of the year all play a big part in fish prices

even a shops location will play a part on prices a shop centre of town will charge more for a fish than a shop in the woods as the shop in town will pay higher rent

even the type of shop plays a part in prices a big chain of shops will have greater buying power than a small family owned shop

I'm sorry but you cant class a fish under the price of $100 as expensive it maybe expensive to the average fish keeper but a collector would pay $100 without a 2nd thought
