all piranhas are over rated. Sure they can eat a rat thats in their tank, but my rats would eat a piranha in their cage. EFF P's!

lol..true..even oscars can gulp mice .. Ps are cool fish, just doesnt live up to the hype some people associate them with.

Guppy - Redtails are beautiful ! its just that they can eat a newborn fully grown :(

overated - yes piraha are over hyped and now have become overated (still a nice fish though) oscars, wolfish.
underated - geo's definately and uarus i love these there so entertaining.

i will come back with some others

overrated - african cichlids from Malawi - they typically have little personality and while the males are often beautiful, you have to put up with the drab females
underrated - North American natives - there are many natives that rival tropicals for beauty and yet they have absolutely no popularity here in the states

EDIT: I almost forgot the most overrated fish - giant ryukin and oranda goldfish

OVERRATED -

Pike cichlids
doviis
jags
piranhas
red devils and other cichlids that have big lumpy heads
African cichlids - small and boring. Good for feeders though
Wolf fish (hoplias) - just like a turd with teeth.

UNDERRATED -

Oscars- sure they are common, and there are better looking fish out there, but they are intelligent, funny and brave fish. They are a fun fish to keep.

Ctenopoma, spotted climbing perch.

Snakeheads - yes they are still rated highly, but underrated by many. They are the ultimate predator.

Comet goldfish - active, brightly coloured, cheap, voracious :D And grow to a decent size. Pretty good fish all in all.

PIctus catfish - small but pretty and aggressive and hyperactive.

Freshwater barracudas - These are REALLY underrated. I prefer these to vampire tetras and ATFs, mine were a really pretty irridescent gold, big eyes, big teeth, active, and nailed anything that moved that was somewhat small enough to eat. Really cool fish. I'm talking about the Acestrorhynchus species.

Fish such as arowanas, bichirs and peacock bass are neither under or over rated. They deserve their popularity.

Overrated: Piranhas, red tail catfish, snakeheads, african cichlids.
Underrated: Eels (any), pufferfish, archerfish, freshwater barracudas and plecos

underated- goldfish, pikes(smaller ones esp.), killi fish, barracuda cichlid(can''t think of the real name)

overated- snakeheads, p's, asian aros
